Description This series comes with a little story.

I've been submitting photos here for over 2 years now, and most of them were taken in Romania, my home country.
The biggest part of my submissions were photos of nice places, of beautiful places, and I have received many "I have to visit Romania" comments, which were flattering... but. There's always a but, isn't there?
Well, while I still believe that Romania is a beautiful country with a lot to show, and a lot of potential, I think it's important that I show the other side of it as well. As it's part of our lives, and we simply can't ignore it by only highlighting the good side.

This series is a collection of 14 photos that I took in a part of Bucharest called Ferentari. It is well-known around here for being a really dangerous area, but not all of it is actually bad. However, there are a few areas in Ferentari where, if you have the guts to go... let's just say you remain marked for life. As I have.

This particular area that I photographed isn't really the baddest, but I really didn't want to risk going into any of the others, and I especially chose to go on a rainy Saturday morning, so there wouldn't be many people around... I didn't want to attract too many people's attention with my camera.

There are no rules in these places. The police is trying to avoid them just as much as any of the other citizens do. The garbage is disposed everywhere, and not in special containers... but randomly on the ground, or in huge piles that can sometimes get as high as two floors. Just try to picture that. The smells there are impossible, there are always groups of old and middle age women and dirty kids rounded in front of the buildings' entrances, eating seeds and doing God-knows-what all day long.

The buildings there are made of one room flats, the entrances have no doors, the walls have no paint (or it's destroyed beyond any recognition), and one time when I entered one of those buildings, there were blood marks on the walls and a human dump in a corner. Seriously.

Anyway, enough talking. Bottom line is that I wanted to be honest and show you it's not all just pretty, cute and lovely.

PS: Check out the first thing I noticed when I entered this area: [link]

PPS: The first couple of images from there aren't that bad. I thought I should ease you in

Amazing work!

I think if people are honest - everywhere in the world has this. Ive lived all over the US, Montreal, Paris, Lyon, London and other parts of Britain. Ive travelled a great deal; you cant escape it - many of us just put blinders on if one is fortunate enough to not have that as our reality...

Wherever I go, I am always aware that behind the bright and shiny facade lies something else...

Hmm I live in the center (Timpuri Noi) an I remember when this area was also a dangerous one (nothing alike Ferentari thou) and in front of my balcony was a garbage pile of 2 floors so mostly I know what you're talking about. I had no chance to go in Ferentari and if anyone visits Bucharest I don't see why he should go there if in 21 years I didn't . You have a lot to see in other areas. Anyway from what I know Paris has the same thing - a beautiful center and at frontier there is a Ferentari not shown to visitors . I think you can find a Ferentari in many other countries... Hope the civilisation will bloom there too I must tell you how confused I got when I first saw your photos "Why did she took photos of old dirty blocks?", I hurry I didn't took a good loock but this Sat morning I also read the story. I'm gonna visit it. Kiss ya

and despite all of that you did a picture that posseses beauty and strenght
well done!
i guess that all that is the price that people have to pay for the perks of city life
lisbon has as well "her" dark corners, it ads to the mystique don't you think?

i completly know wath you mean. but some people possese the strenght to "breakout" of these places.
i grew up in a bad area of lisbon, when i went to school i usted to see junkies and homeless people sleeping on the streets, and all the filth they made.

and now my mom my brother and I live in a nice area, with cafes, nice shops, a tattoo shop, a park etc... in walking distance, but guess what? the nicer times i spend was with my friends in that place, but problably the area you refer it's much worse than the one i grew up

It's great to hear you live in a better area now, and I know what you mean that you felt like you had better times in the bad area... that's most likely because that's where you spent your childhood, and kids usually aren't pretentious... they just want to have fun, and a kid knows to have fun anywhere... We all feel very connected to where we spent our childhood
