Description August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter who utilized a combination of simplified forms and patchwork colors to produce vibrant portraits and figurative scenes. “What I most cherish is the observation of the movement of colors,” he once said. Macke became one of the most important pioneers in the world of art at the beginning of the 20th century.

The person he portrayed most was his wife Elisabeth. They married in 1909 when she was 21 and August was 22 years old. He had portrayed her more than 200 times! Must have been real love…

Sad ending: In 1914 August Macke was drafted into World War I and sent to the French Front. He died in battle a few weeks later that year. He was only 27 years old.

I’ve always wanted to reproduce this portrait of Elisabeth because of the vibrant colors. Of course my colour pencil drawing of Elisabeth’s portrait went very different from Macke‘s oil painting… I found „my“ Elisabeth is less pensive and somehow she’s in a better mood though … 😆
