I must beg your forgiveness. A terrible head cold kept me in bed for a few days, and I found myself without strength to answer your letter. Luckily, my sickness was contained to me and did not infect anyone else in my household. I pray you were not too lonely without my letters. The Pope left shortly before I fell ill, and his visit turned out to be a success! I was able to keep my thoughts internalized, dear friend. You shall not see my head on a spike any time soon. While in bed, I managed to finish the book you gave me. It was thoroughly enchanting tale; I am quite taken with the hero! In other news, my father has commissioned a statue to be built of my great grandfather, Lorenzo the Magnificent. An excellent statesmen, but from what my father says a very inappropriate man! Not so magnificent after all. Again, I beg your forgiveness and hope you do not despise me so much as to not write back.

How good it was to hold a letter of yours in my hands and to know that you are alive and well—and that you do not hate me. I could have sung praises all night, sweet lady. There is nothing to forgive—I only pray that you have regained all your strength. I am thrilled that you enjoyed the book; it is one of my favorites. I should very much like to see the statue when it is finished. Who is sculpting it? Florence is, of course, the center of culture as of late so I am certain your father had the pick of talented artists. My coronation shall take place in two weeks. I cannot wait to see you and your brother. I hope this letter arrives on time, and I implore you to write to me one more time before you leave. If I might be permitted to bare my soul to you, I confess that I am nervous for that day. I do not feel prepared to be king—I do not think I would ever feel ready. Alas, this is my pleasant and painful duty, and I desire to fulfill it to the best of my abilities. Pray for me, good lady, and write to me soon so that your words might soothe my soul.

Your letter arrived two days before Alessandro and I depart for France. Oh, I am so excited I can hardly sleep! I have not seen a formal coronation ever, and I would be most interested to know how much a grand event like that would cost. I have, of course, been praying for your health, mind, heart, and soul as you ascend to your throne. Know that you have all my confidence in your abilities to be a wonderful king. The fact that you desire to be a good ruler for your people is the first step! The people of France are certainly blessed to have you as their sovereign. I look forward to staying in your palace and partaking in your hospitality. To answer your question, my father has commissioned Lorenzetto to sculpt the statue. He is a fabulous artist; I am excited to see the final results! And another note: I was at quite a loss over what to bring you for your coronation. I finally decided on a few gifts that will remind you of Florence. I will not give away the surprise, but there is, of course, fine Florentine leather. The next time we speak it shall be face to face and not through letters. All the joy in the world fills my heart at the thought of seeing your face.
