With a shrug your coat adjusted onto your shoulder. With an air of ease you snapped the clasps shut, as your feet slid their way into your thick boots. You froze for a second as you thought you heard something creak. After listening for a moment you carefully opened the door to the slimmest crack you could squeeze out of.

After edging out to the porch of the country house, you carefully closed the door. After listening for a few moments you started crunching your way through the freshly laid snow. You shoved your hands into your deep pockets and walked alongside the gravel road leading to town square.

As you slowly meandered forward as snowflakes slowly fluttered and kissed your eyelashes. Your breath turning to fog in the cold winter air. The scenery changing from the intermingled foliage to the sharp lines of the town that you lived right outside.

You emerged to the centre of town, a large flat area centred around the statue of some important town figure. You brushed snow off one of the benches that were dispersed throughout the square. You sat and waited patiently until the tall lanky form of your lover appeared.

"Nikolai," you breathed as he neared you.

He flashed a small smile as you dashed into his arms. You inhaled his scent as he drew you close to him and rocked the two of you back and forth.

"I missed you so much," you murmured into his parka.

The two of you lived into a twisted retelling of Romeo and Juliet, and living it made the tale of star crossed lovers a lot less romantic than when you were a school girl studying it for English. Your brother Alfred absolutely loathed Nikolai's brother, Ivan. As a result you were forbidden to have any contact with Ivan's family.

You were able to meet your brothers demands until a school trip to the nearby city at the end of high school. After Nikolai had saved you from being mugged and raped when you got separated from the group, you couldn't help but to be drawn to the Belarusian. Truth be told all of the animosity comes from Alfred, your other brother Matthew and Ivan were quite supportive of the two of you and would draw Alfred's attention away from the two of you.

Your chest tightened as your heart swelled as it did every time the two of you kissed.

"I love you too," another peck to the lips before he swept you into a dance.

Your hand moved to clutch at his hand and the other clasped his shoulder as his moved to your waist. The two of you swayed to a mute waltz, the snow twirling around the pair of you like dancers at the ball. His silver shone with an ethereal glow.

He rested his forehead against yours and softly stared into your eyes. His usually cold dark blue eyes shone with warmth that only you seemed to bring out.

The tender moment was disrupted by your phone buzzing. Frantically you snatched the device and snapped it open. Your eyes watered at the bright screen as you struggled to read the text. Your heart dropped at what you read.

Alfred knows you're gone. You have five minutes until he gets there. Mattie.

"Alfred's coming," tears pricked at the corner of your eyes.

"No crying," his thick Belarusian accent distorted the words as his thumb ran across the bottom of your eyes smearing the water.

"I can't bear the thought without you," tears slipped out of your eyes despite your lover's request.

"Marry me?" his request froze you for a few moments.

"Re...really?" you finally stuttered.

He lifted your left hand and pressed a small kiss to the ring finger.

"Dy."

"Of course I'll marry you," a smile spread across your face.

He pulled out a velvet box before opening it as a ring came to view. He pulled it out of it's satin resting place and slid it on the finger he had kissed.

Your fingers slowly entwined with his.

"We shouldn't have to hide our relationship," your voice grew more determined as headlights appeared in the distance, "just because our brother's hate each other."

Hands clasped together the two of you turned to the truck that you had spent childhood summers peering out of the dirty glass with an awestruck look at the changing landscape. With your fiancée squeezing comfort into your thin fingers you couldn’t help but think that your story will end better than the Shakespearean drama of two star crossed lovers.
