Description Canada X Reader ~ The Book ~ The Book of Negroes or Someone Knows my Name

Your book bag swished with each step, creating a rhythm from the smack of the textbooks hitting your hip. Despite not visiting the literature section you were a common visitor to the library, you had a crush on one of the librarian helpers who you often saw around and about the library putting books away. You met him when you accidently knocked into – quite literally – and your books went tumbling to the floor. Just like a cliché scene from a high school romance the moment your eyes met as he was helping you pick up your books you were head over heels.

You then visited the library frequently and spent hours at a time reading books hoping to muster the courage to talk to him, but you haven’t yet. Rather you had acquired a comprehensive understanding of a lot of different subjects, it was by comparing the book you were reviewing to Descartes Meditations that you managed to get an extremely high grade.

You passed several other English countries before coming across the Canadian section, but there were already two people there. One of them looked familiar to you, a football player vaguely ran through your head, and the other was him.  The familiar looking one looked towards you before a mischeivious grin spread across his face. He patted him on the shoulder.

“You look a little lost,” he called out to you, pushing him forward, “my brother works here. Matthew help the chick find her way.”

He pushed Matthew towards you and then began to run off, shouting something about football practice.

“I’m sorry about him,” his face was bright red as he apologized, “he’s always been like that.”

“So you’re brothers,” you reiterated what you learned in an attempt not to panic as your eyes scrolled the shelves.

“Twins actually,” he responded before adding, “fraternal obviously. We’re nothing alike.”

“Who was he?” you asked, wanting to put a name to someone who looked so familiar.

He looked shocked for a moment before he gave a slight chuckle.

“Alfred F. Jones.”

“And he does what exactly,” you dragged your voice out and your eyes squinted.

“He’s a football player, quite highly favoured,” he said before bitterly adding, “Got a full scholarship despite the fact he nearly failed classes in highschool.”

“It still means nothing to me,” you said, giving up on looking for the book and began focusing on conversing with him.

“He was in those shirtless calendars that they sold at Christmas.”

“Oh right,” you remembered, “my roommate bought twenty of them. She has the biggest crush on him.”

The two of you stood there in silence before he suddenly remembered something.

“You needed help finding something,” he softly, yet with a shocked undertone, said.

“I’m looking for a book called, Someone knows my Name by Lawrence Hill,” you said pulling out the paper that you had scribbled the name of the book that you read years ago on.

“That’s the problem right there,” he said, a small smile on his face, “we have it under its original name.”

“Original name?” you inquired.

“It was renamed in the States to help boost sales,” he pulled a book off the shelf and you squinted to get a glimpse of the name.

The Book of Negroes was emblazoned on the cover and you gave a small oh.

“I can understand why they changed it.”

“Don’t worry, it’s not meant in a racist connotation it’s simply a…” he began to ramble, red peeping up into his cheeks.

“I’ve read it already.” You said, trying to calm him down.

“I’m glad I could help them,” he said his cheeks still red.

“I’m glad you could as well,” you smiled at him.

“I’ve seen you around here and I’ve been meaning to ask you and I thought since I just got off if you would... Well what I meant is…”

“Would you like to go get some coffee?”

You gave a smile at his cheeks now bright red and you pressed a soft kiss to one of them.

“I’d love to,” his face beamed as he held one of his arms towards you and you linked it with one of yours as the pair of you left the building.
