Description Although it was late, Cassandra decided to go over the new spells she had learned that day. Snug in her little room in the tower, with her familiar Tabu keeping her company, she revised her day's lessons.

This is so cute, all the elements for a little witches room are around, candles, pestle and mortars, spellbooks and the atmosphere of a tower room Well done.

Thanks for noticing. It's all those little details that take time to create. I do like thinking them up though!

Nice deviation! It's funny, I used the same window in my deviation for the same Contest But I didn't work on the lights as well as you did...

Yes, I'd noticed that you used it and I wondered if I should still use it but decided that our works were different enough not to matter. I've had this background in my files for months waiting for the right manip. The cutting out took me ages as the window design was so complicated but it was worth it in the end. Doing the lighting is always my favourite part of manipulation because everything else is in place, you're happy with the composition and then bam!, the lighting brings it to life. Thanks for commenting!

I also thought to cut out the window and put a background but I'm lazy Any tips for the lignting with Photoshop? Do you use the dodge & burn or some shadow/lights layer?

Digimaree In reply to Adr13n [2013-04-28 08:42:26 +0000 UTC]

I use blend modes a lot, multiply or overlay, and different levels of opacity. I also use textures. Sometimes I'll just paint some light on in a blend mode layer such as I did for the candlelight and the moonbeams coming in the window. Then I'll do some final touches with dodge and burn. Burn didn't work for the shadows under the objects in the windowsill (as the rock was too light) so I copied parts of the dark rock and erased sections around each object. Each manip has its own series of steps and I don't ever do each one completely the same.

Long time no see! I'm really happy that you're participating in this one.

I do have a suggestion on practically a perfect deviation. Since she's sitting so close to the candles then her cat, I would think the light that hits her would be brighter. Like over her chest, on her face and arms. Do you agree?
