HDMS Jylland was the last wooden-hulled warship of the Danish Royal Navy. She was launched on 20 January 1860 and was comparable in size and performance to the screw frigates in use at the time by other world navies. These were based on traditional sailing frigates but were modified to incorporate early steam propulsion using propellers or screws instead of the more common paddlewheels at the time, which were bulky and could be easily destroyed in a battle. Jylland was notable in that her single main screw was mounted in such a way that it could be retracted into a well for more efficient operation while under sail alone. She saw action against Austrian and Prussian warships in the Battle of Heilgoland on 9 May 1864, heavily damaged by 18 hits during that battle, subsequently repaired, and then used by Denmark's King Christian X on various diplomatic visits to Iceland and Russia. From 1870 on Jylland was used almost exclusively as a training ship, but by 1890 she was so worn out that she was decommissioned and hulked as both a barracks ship and stationary training vessel. She barely escaped being scrapped in 1908 (she was actually sold to the breakers but then brought back), and continued in use with the Danish Navy as a stationary hulk through both World Wars and into the Cold War until 1960, when the Danish government decided to restore her to a museum ship. By this time Jylland was in such bad shape, with over 60% of the original ship rotted beyond restoration, that she had to be drydocked for an almost total rebuild. In 1984 she was moved to Ebertoft, which would become her new home, and it was there that her restoration was finally completed. Jylland is one of the few examples of a classic mid-19th century screw frigate still remaining in the world. This is a straight port with no changes by me. While I was at it, I went ahead and whipped up a quick-and-dirty set of textures so this Jylland model could also be used to represent a Merrimac class screw frigate of the United States Navy (USN), which first entered service in 1854 and which would go on to be prominent players during the subsequent American Civil War (1862-1865). My custom textures are based on those of Tom Sanford's low poly USN screw frigate model and are thus not entirely accurate, nor is Jylland herself a perfect match for a Merrimac class screw frigate. I think it's close enough for my purposes - from the waterline up, anyway - and the model was handy, so there you go. Perhaps it will be for yours too.
This is not my model. All I did was port it to OBJ for you and provide the alternate version repainted in my quick-and-dirty Merrimac class textures. Please credit Erwin Welker for his original effort (as do I) if you use this in any of your own 3D projects. You do not have to credit me for anything on my part.
