COMMENTS
My attempt to portray Sulu covered in strawberry icing is horrible and my apologies to everyone. There's also some issues with his ported character model I didn't discover until I posed this page, so I'll have to get those fixed too. I also apologize for not being able to show you the real mess that Rec Room 4 has become, nor showing the occasional bits and patches of icing on Jan, Chief Briel, and Kirk (in particular on his posterior). XPS memory limitations as well as those of my posing skill and proper available models there. All the same I wanted to get this page up anyway, bad attempt and all, in order to move the story along. I hope you'll forgive me. Oh, and if anyone wants to volunteer to do better and create replacement panels of what I'm trying to depict in this scene, I'll gladly put them up or link to them and give you proper credit for them too.
I got the cake - As per the original short story, including the line, although remember that the cooking lesson is one of my STNV additions to give both Jan and Sulu cover for being in there with Briel. In the original Sulu was supposedly just taking a break by himself. In the STNV adaptation Sulu is helping both Jan and Briel to set up Kirk's surprise birthday party when things "go wacky." That's when Sulu got surprised and nailed good and proper by the malfunctioning automats ... or in his own words, "I got the cake." He didn't let that happen a second time, so he kept the malfunctioning automats busy trying to nail him again while Jan and Briel "hid the evidence" (party decorations, all the food that's still good, etc.) as fast as they could before Kirk could get there. All of it is in the storeroom, which Scotty is quick to figure out, and since he has a good excuse to go in there (to get at the malfunctioning machinery via removing a wall panel in there) then he does and thus keeps Kirk from thinking about going in there himself to see what's wrong and thus stumble upon all of "the evidence."
In the original short story Kirk's order for the Class One systems check is given earlier in the plot on the bridge and right after he finishes his log entry. I moved it here so the rather obvious mini-disaster in Rec Room 4 would be an obvious reinforcement as to his justification for it.
like on that Arcosion ship - If you'll recall from Act I (page 4), Kirk commented on the Arcosian ship's computer attacking him by any means available when he tried to rescue Mori and his incapacitated parents. Kirk fears that whatever happened to that ship's computer may be affecting the Enterprise too, given his earlier failed computer wake-up alarm (actually Spock's doing but Kirk doesn't know that) and what just happened in Rec Room 4.
I will not have this ship turned into a practical joker a second time. - My dialogue addition, given some rather obvious parallels between certain events in "Surprise!" (such as this one) and those of TAS "The Practical Joker." Kirk has his reasons for being so insistent about this, if you've seen the episode. XD
