Description

Ripped to OBJ from the model included with the game Silent Hunter IV: Wolves of the Pacific (SH4) by Ubisoft.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The twelve boats of the Tambor class submarines are widely considered to be the first successful "fleet boats" fielded by the United States Navy.  They began entering service in 1939, and were finished just in time for the United States entry into World War II.  In fact six Tambors were either patrolling Hawaiian coastal waters, in nearby Central Pacific waters, or actually present - in the case of USS Tautog (SS-199) when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on the morning of 7 December 1941.  They represented the culmination of every experiment and improvement that the USN had tried with its various interwar regular and experimental submarine classes, and met or surpassed every expectation the USN had for them:  21 knots top surfaced speed, operational range of 11,000 nautical miles (allowing for patrols in Japanese home waters), better diesel-electric propulsion than earlier classes, and a redesigned interior for improved combat efficiency.  They were also the first USN fleet boats to mount a heavy main forward battery of six 21-inch torpedo tubes, which would become a standard for subsequent classes.  They were built in two batches of six, with the second batch sometimes treated separately as the Gar class due to their having a stronger hull with greater diving depth, but otherwise both batches were visually and internally identical.  Tambor set the standard for what was to come, and efforts to make it even better than it was led directly to Gato - the definitive USN "fleet boat" of World War II.  To find out more about the USN's Tambor class submarine, follow the link below:

This is an old game rip of mine from a few years back, when I was just learning how to get at the Silent Hunter series models.  It is missing the raised periscopes and radar masts because I captured the model while it was submerged.  You'll have to either come up with those yourself from elsewhere or borrow the ones off of my Battlestations Gato if you need them.

I don't minde if you further tweak, mod, or hack this, retexture it, and re-release your own version(s) accordingly.  If you do, then please credit Ubisoft for the original.  You do not have to credit me for my part.

For non-profit, non-commercial use only.

ASIDE - Remember, this CG model can be used either for Tambor or Gar, as the two were visually identical.

TRIVIA - The USN submarine that achieved the most kills during World War II was the Tambor class fleet boat USS Tautog (SS-199).  Yes, she's the same one that was at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941.  She's credited with downing a Japanese bomber during that raid, and she would go on to sink 26 ships for a total of 72,606 tons.  She was known as "the Terrible T" on both sides, and on her thirteen wartime patrols gave the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) more grief than any other single USN unit.  Here's a link to her history, if you plan on using this model to represent her in any of your own 3D projects:
