Description “War is Indecent” says the sign held by one of the women of Breast not Bombs. I have seen many comments from friends in my journal as well as friends at deviantART and Flickr that believe this is silliness which accomplishes nothing and that it may even hurt the cause of ending the war in Iraq. I am actually torn in forming my own opinion because I just don’t know if it’s anything more then entertainment at best. I do know that the march in DC was very serious, people are very unhappy with so many aspects of our government and its domestic and global policies. Topless women carrying signs of anger and shouting ideas of different ways of thinking that in their opinion will make this world a better place, may just be the type of contrast and even comic relief the crowd of marchers needed. Most of us that went to DC on the 24th of September 2005 were all there for the same reason and although there were a couple dozen hippie hating pro-war and pro-Bush folks along the route, we were pretty much preaching to the choir and letting off steam. Maybe baring ones breast, holding signs of dissent and singing your mantra in the streets is way out there as far as making a real difference, but its got us talking about it and maybe that’s the point.

When: September 24th 2005
Where: Washington DC
What: The United for Peace and Justice Anti-War protest & march

I absolutely love this photo, I'm doing a power point at school and I was wondering if I could use this picture in one of my slides? I don't know how the class will take it, but hey, if it's inapropriate, is war apropriate?

Anyways, Have agreat day. I think this is my favourite photo or any submission on DA.

Well at least she is putting her opinion out there.
Better to let it all "hangout" and say what you feel, eh?
I see much more truth in her breasts than in listening to a Bush speech!
Great capture, as always. Always excellent captures of emotion that are thought provoking.

Indeed, profound and passionate.
I like reading your comments. I think reading what people say about your photos is almost as interesting as the photos, I said ALMOST. My comment was really directed at a few of those.
Like "Yes, I agree; war is indecent, but damn, please put on a bra and a shirt for God's sake!"

it only takes one image to spark a change in the world. maybe this is it.
i've always had my opinions on the war, so naturally i would completely agree with the message.
this is so much more than that.
it's not only making a stand against the war, but it's relaying a message of hope.
or maybe thats just what it does to me.
i feel hopeful when i look at this.

What, you mean like the times where people have justly defended homelands or marched to destroy oppresors? The statement is a foolish absolute of someone who is following blind hate.

saintcarvin In reply to saintcarvin [2007-08-04 04:04:39 +0000 UTC]

Her blind hate is her push against peace. I never claimed to have resolute love, but I am no enemy of peace. Peace is NOT the absence of war, it is the absence of fear and tyranny. She's jumped like so many blindly onto a bandwagon of ignorance to the fact that in the real world the only people who are hurt by pacifism are the weak and the innocent. The blind hate is to those I am sure she yells and protests against, knowing nothing of what they really stand for or believe in- no to mention, everyone that has to see her.

StillWater-- [2006-10-04 09:34:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think it's great. It shows the total absurdity of the whole situation: we live in a society where a woman with her top off in public is automatically declared indecent and even illegal, whereas something as monumentally putrid as war is actually sanctioned by the government, while much of the population supports it, and for others, it is merely a subject of uncertainty and debate.

Sure, most pro-war people probably will look on her with scorn and judgement and little more, but maybe one or two will get the irony she was trying to convey.

The other thing that is poignant is that few things represent *life* more than the naked body. And I'm not talking about a dehumanised, objectified naked model on a billboard selling some crap, but a real naked body, like this woman here. Her nakedness and vulnerability represents life, the sacred gift God gave us. Whereas war represents the opposite: death, the destruction of that gift.

It's amazing that so many people who call themselves Christians in your country support war, and what's sadder still is that a great many of the people who saw this woman and scorned her for her 'indecency' would have been those same people.

MauserGirl [2006-09-26 08:34:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure this is the best way to get a message across. I think if I'd see her (are we sure this is a woman?) in the street, I would probably run screaming the other way, attempting to gouge my eyeballs out with a ballpoint pen....

superfrodo [2006-08-16 02:52:28 +0000 UTC]

I like this picture. I think it goes well with the other pictures of the crazy Christians in your gallery (don't get me wrong, I am a proud Catholic, but I do not approve of the actions of some other Christians). For example, if the people wearing shirts that say "Real Christians Do Not Sin" saw the woman in this picture, they would probably become more concerned with her nudity than with thousands of people dying overseas because of war, which is a much bigger and much more serious problem.
I think that's the message that this picture conveys - there are things far more indecent than public sex, nudity, and pornography. War = murder.

it is like a man's head (it's not just the beard that is masculine but the face too) and a woman's body. i wasn't disgusted until i saw the face.

"but its got us talking about it and maybe that’s the point"
To those who say protesting does nothing, I disagree. Raise your voice..scream if you have..show your boobs if you have to..get arrested if you have to... to get through the apathy. So many..too many americans just sit in their lazy-boyz stuffing take out McDonald dinners down their throats bitching and whineing at the news...about the stateof the US, the government..and MOST of them dont even freaking vote! What if people like Rosa Parkes, MLK.. had never had the nerve to speak out? A great thought provoking image.
