If I had to make a stab at Bo's breed, I'd go 100% with Catahoula Leopard Dog. I've bred these for the past 18 years or so, and I've got a few pics in my gallery, waaaaay back. Here's just one, of my big brindle-merle male, "Bubba" [link] . He's unusually large, being a "throwback" to the breed's Alaunt Mastiff ancestors, brought to the New World as biological weapons of sorts by the Conquistadors. Most male Catahoulas weigh between 65 and 90 pounds, and most Catahoulas have at least one pale blue eye, called "glass" eyes by Catahoula enthusiasts. Catahoulas are fairly common on the Hawaiian islands, where they're used to hunt and catch wild hogs, their traditional purpose.

Thanx on your insights. I have never had a doubt that Bo came from pig hunting stock. Over here in Kauai we call him a poi dog (rhymes with boy) Ai in a mutt. We picked him up at the pound. They listed him as a lab. Never saw a lab that looked like him. especially his eyes. He is obiusly a hunter as every rooster for miles has been treed by him many a time. He saw pig once while he was leashed into the back of my truck. I'm sure you could guess... yup tried ta hang his self from a moving truck.

He seemss to be a bit difernt to me than your dogs not so pitbullish. I'm no expert but for sure he could have some Catahoula in him. But I read up on weimaraners and he sure seems a lot like them temperment wise plus the eyes. coats totally wrong though. And when a siren goes by he hows like a hound. still a mystery other people tell me Rodiesan ridgeback heard that a few times.

I am really glad the pig hunters don't have him. Not impressed with the way they treat their hunting dogs

Catahoulas vary a bit in type. Some are more Pit Bull-like, as you described mine, and some are more "houndy". It depends on bloodlines. Some tend to be tall and rangy and others more stocky, but that's due the Mastiff influence. Bo's behavior sounds VERY Catahoula, including the howling at sirens and going ballistic over a pic while he was in the back of a truck, plus his strong prey drive. His face doesn't look Weimaraner at all to me, and Weims have GRAY eyes to match their coats, not ice blue eyes, except when they're really young puppies. He's almost certainly half Catahoula, at least, and probably was a hog dog before he would up at the pound, probably after being lost during a hunt.

what about the curly tail

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pitbulllady In reply to digitalwiz [2008-02-11 00:56:15 +0000 UTC]

A lot of Catahoulas have curly tails; THAT trait came from French breed popular with Creole colonists, the Beauceron. This breed contributed not only that tail, but the tan or rust "points"(like a Rottweiler or Doberman)found on many Catahoulas, and the multiple dew claws found on the hind legs of many Catahoulas, and was one of the contributers of the merle gene, responsible for the mottled coat and/or blue eyes of many of this breed. Weimaraners, being pointing dogs, should have as straight a tail as possible, even though 1/3 of it is usually docked. The Beauceron's tail is often described as a "fishhook" tail. There's quite possibly some Spanish Greyhound behind the Catahoula as well, since that breed was one of the ones documented as having accompanied the Spaniards to the New World, along with the big Alaunt(or Alano)Mastiff. That breed, by the way, was also the ancestor of another breed originally used for wild boar hunting, the Great Dane, and 100 years ago or so, it would have been difficult to distinguish between a Great Dane and a Catahoula, before the former were bred as tall, elegant show dogs.

multiple dew claws found on the hind legs??

pitbulllady In reply to digitalwiz [2008-02-11 10:52:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you know those little claws found normally on the front legs of dogs, that sort of correspond to our thumbs? Some breeds have them on the back legs as well, and they can occur in any breed, but breeders normally cut them off at birth because they can get torn off later. Some breeds not only have one dew claw on each back leg, but two or even three, and Catahoulas(along with Beaucerons, Spanish Mastiffs, and many other continental European Mastiff breeds)have a tendency to display this trait.
