I figured since I was voicing my opinion about breeds and people were actually starting to think about it, I would make this one too.

I'm sorry, but I hate pet-names. I find them condescending and just...irritating, especially when you barely know the person and ESPECIALLY when they're younger than you.

Not to mention it seems to be a fad on dA for everyone to call everyone else 'hun'. -shudders-

._. it's these petty things that bother me.

Yes! I hate that too. That is part of the reason I am so turned off by pet-names is that people use them to berate others. >>;

I know, right? It's so annoying. The complaints forum on this site is an abomination.

Often on dA people use pet names when a user did something bad. I saw something where one user was harassing me, and one of my friends talked to the user, and my friend was named "dear"

I also saw an instance where a user caught some underage user and called them honey.

Yeah, they do like to use it as some sort of...way to look down on people and try to belittle them. I don't like it.

I agree entirely
I hate it whenever I thank someone for a fave on deviant art and then they reply with something like
'no problem hun' or 'don't worry about it dear'
Even though people don't mean to, it does sound condescending -___-

I definitely agree with when their younger than you. In my junior year of high school my freshmen friend, who was like a lil sister to me, started calling my hun online and I slapped her upside the head the next day

Yeah, most people don't do it on purpose. i have a lot of friends from the south and they don't realize, it's just part of their culture. >< Doesn't stop annoying me though, since that's what my parents used to call me when I was a kid.

I use hun and hon both, as well as dear sometimes. They're just little endearments though, they're not meant to degrade, far from it, and it's just something I do naturally and have done for years now. I can see why it might bug someone, but I simply use it in place of not knowing someone's name, and finding it awkward to refer to people by their usernames, specially ones with numbers.

Nods.

I hate it when people are trying to insult you, or are having an argument with you and they spit out some bullshit petname ¬¬

Recent example:

"Get real, honey."

I HAAAAAAAAAAATE that. XD

knockingghosts [2009-01-29 05:53:07 +0000 UTC]

I really hate pet names; they make me want to cringe. There is a person at my school who seemed to think it was the cutest thing to call me one--and she was indeed a lot younger then me. Maybe people are inclined to call me that because I am short or don't look very intimidating. But...I really hate it. And it is even worse when it happens here, because I don't really know the people who try to call me something 'cute' here.

Maybe I have some twisted version of a Napoleonic complex...

Diikae In reply to knockingghosts [2009-01-29 05:55:04 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! Everyone finds me small and cute so they feel the need to call me petnames and I'm like "WTF. Do I know you btch?" ._. It's so obnoxious. I haaate them.

As someone who does use pet-names a great deal, I have no problem with your opinion. I tend to use "dearie" or "darling" a lot, but that's because it's just the way I speak. I call everyone, no matter the age, "dear". I don't find it condescending personally, but I can see why some like you would consider it slightly insulting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Diikae In reply to SkullsandHeartbones [2009-01-29 00:59:47 +0000 UTC]

It probably depends with how you were raised. My parents are the only ones who ever called me pet names...and so it's something I relate to them, older people, people I should have respect for...you know?
Maybe not. Maybe I'm just a bitch. lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SkullsandHeartbones In reply to Diikae [2009-01-29 01:16:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't think you're a bitch. XD You actually are pretty polite about not wanting to be called pet names. But you do have a point. You equate being called a pet name with being subconciously told that you are under the authority of whoever is calling you the name. I equate it with someone making a friendly overture, most of the time. I do frown on people who don't know me calling me "sugar". I'm perfectly alright being called "dear", "darling", and "hon", but unless you are friend or family you may not call me "sugar". "Babe" I tolerate better because I have the strange tendency to call people "honey-babe" but usually they're friends who're younger than me.

I don't like the spelling of hun. Hunny is a joke to me. For example, one day my sister's boyfriend's creepy father said to my brother, "Thank you, Hunny." I always associate it with that now.

But I love hon/honey. Only from my boyfriend, though. Anything he calls me is either pretty or cute.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Diikae In reply to TerrorCookie [2009-01-28 16:47:04 +0000 UTC]

I spelled hun in the stamp 'hon' for some reason, but hunny in the way that you hate, for humorous reasons. xD That's kind of amusing.

I don't mind pet names from my close friends or significant others...but i'd say that 99.9% of dA's population doesn't fit into either of those categories. c8

Arrgg, I hate it when people call me 'Hun'. Like honestly, especially the ones who feel the need to complain to me, or tell me how to make my 'art' within their parameters(not the people who give honest critiques, when desired, but the people who say "You should do this instead, because this is lame")

Like, people I have never met before, end everything they say with Hun. WTF!? It creeps me out, like, they think they know me in RL or something.*shudder*

MuteGator [2009-01-27 23:59:52 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I love this.

Yes, there are those times when I'll slap one of my friend's butts and call then 'hun' or 'dear' jokingly... but for the most part if I call someone 'hun','darling', and most commonly 'woman'(regardless of gender) the people that know me know I'm not in a good mood, you know the about to jump on someone and claw their eyes out mood.

It depends on the words around pet-names as to how I take it.

but I'm really not an angry person... I swear.

Diikae In reply to MuteGator [2009-01-28 00:09:18 +0000 UTC]

Lol, I see. xD I do things like that too. If I'm in an argument and I'm being condescending and snarky I'll call someone a pet name...or if I'm joking like you said.

My guilty word I call everyone is 'kid'. xD Not really a petname, but I do call everyone kid, or man. xD

MuteGator In reply to Diikae [2009-01-28 00:15:28 +0000 UTC]

Haha, the people I ride horses with are normally 30-50 years old, I call them all 'kid' and they just adore it. Once a 13 year old rode with us and I said something along the lines of "let's go kids" being the only sober one with the best lead trail horse I'm normally herding them all home after a long ride and the little 13 year old just attacked me for it. Haha, well I didn't even have time to defend myself before she got a large group of let's say 'tipsy' adults yelling at her.
