Awesome!
What lens did you use?

Dilznacka In reply to Solrac1993 [2011-02-23 04:14:15 +0000 UTC]

14mm sigma 2.8. its not the sharpest thing but you don't really need it to be for these shots just a fast and wide lens.

A program has been made that does all the work for you.

It's called StarTrails.exe.

It can be found here: [link]

Fantastic.

I did some astrophotgraphy in Sequoia this past summer (2007) too. Fantastic out there, isn't it? I want to go back very badly.

ya its beautiful. looks like you were traveling all around. id love to do a 3 weeks trip all around the US seeing the national parks.

Three weeks sounds pretty good. We were out for 60 days. That was too much imo, but it was an awesome summer. If I had a chance to go out again for 2-3 weeks I think I'd do it.

wow... 6 and half hours
majorly awesome picture
im in the process of making a locking mechanism for my camera
attaches to the base plate and a screw holds the shutter

hopefully it will work!

i cannot wait to take some shots like this, they ahev always caught my imagination. not much more saving to go until that dslr is mine haha. how long did you have to keep the shutter open for for this shot?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dilznacka In reply to sector4 [2008-02-01 04:32:30 +0000 UTC]

using digital is a bit more difficult. i use a slr film camera to do these and scan them in. this one was about 5 hours. if you want to use digital you have to get a shutter release that will trigger the camera to take a shot every 30 seconds or minute or so and stack them in photoshop. if you try and shoot a 5 hour exposure with a digital the sensor heats up there's lots of noise. youl need a basic shutter release to hold the shutter open for a film camera.

ahha makes sence. i would love to use a film slr but film is expesive and with not much experiece a lot of it would be wasted attemping to take shots ad getting it wrong! haha. thanks for the advice though, i can't wait to try it out myself.

hitchcockm00 [2007-10-14 01:37:50 +0000 UTC]

How do you do these?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dilznacka In reply to hitchcockm00 [2007-10-14 19:14:05 +0000 UTC]

go somewhere with no light pollution, i use 200 speed film and set my camera on a tripod. wait for the sun to be completely gone.set your camera to bulb and have a shutter release cable hold it open at around f/4. this shot was 6.5 hours. i just set an alarm for around 5am so i don't get any sunrise in it. the less moon the better for star trails.

It's fine and dandy until someone runs aways with the camera in the middle of the night
