Description The African Lioness (Panthera leo) waits in the sea of grass for any prey to come wandering into her view. Most of the prides kills are made by the females working in teams. The females of a pride often stay together all there lives, while the males are usually ousted within 3 years. Taken at the Memphis Zoo on 10-14-11.

the little tinges of purple in the ends of the grass blades add a lot of interest to this. Nice close shot of the lioness.

I so wish I had better zoom. My lion pictures are somewhat lackluster since my zoom won't reach them when they sit in the back of the exhibit...like they do 90% of the time.

Thanks for your kind words. I got extremely lucky to capture this shot. Its not often that the grass grows that tall on the lions paddock or that they bloom that brightly.
Don't worry about not having the best zoom out there. It not about the type of equipment one has, but rather how one uses that equipment. And from what I've seen of your gallery, you have a wonderful skill for photography. Don't give up trying to capture a shot just because it seems hard. I had to wait over 2 hours to get this shot; and this was the best of 50 pictures.

P.S. I'm sorry it took me so long to respond to your comment.

That is one of the nicest things ever said about any of my photographs. Thank you. I try to compose all my photos to make them look as wild as possible; however this one, I think, came out the best. Thanks you so much.

You are welcome, but gain money and do a trip in Africa to see wild lions and learn more about their conservation. Zoos can be good, but zoos can be bads, cause no all zoos take really care of their animals...

I'm not sure If you knew that I'm a Zookeeper, myself. I take a little affiance to your grouping all zoos together. Yes, there are some bad zoos out there; just like there are some bad people in the world. However the majority of Zoological parks care deeply for the wellbeing and safety of there animals. I'm someone who has devoted his life to the conservation and protection of wildlife in all forms. I've seen many of my fellow Zoologists and Zookeepers give there blood, sweat, and tears to care for there animals; a few have given there lives. Please don't convict us all, for the sins of a few evil men.

I'm sorry for becoming angry over your comment; please forgive my rudeness. This is a subject that is a very personal matter for me. I know you did not intend to insult me in anyway. Thank you again for your original comment.

It's okay, it's nice to see a zookeeper
I said that cause when I began photography I was with a friend and he wanted to go at some zoos, so we have see totally 3 zoos, and 1 of the 15 best zoos of europe. The best one was very too small for animals, the best one was a "little zoo", I mean, not very known from the public, but he has a lot of place for all species and they was in good conditions. The 2 others... one was very very very small and no habitat, just sand on the ground, like a litter. And finally the last was good too, a little bit more known than the other. Anyway, I didn't said that all zoos are bad, I just said that some zoos are bad, for the place, for the employees, or for the treatments. I'm happy if you are in a good zoo and a good person for that
Ho, and if I can, I find very stupid to promote white tigers, all white tigers are from only one white tiger captured in the past, so consanguinity and they are not a species... (Maybe I'm wrong, but prove me).
And once again, I didn't say that all zoos are like that!

Thats alright. I misunderstood what you meant, and for that you have my humblest apology. I was sorry to hear about that one despicable zoo you visited; a Zoological park like that in America would be closed down in a heartbeat. Animals should have grass and dirt and space; not concrete, sand and metal bars. This is a interlobular zoo.

I hope you have a great day.

This is a gorgeous shot, especially for a zoo animal. Great lighting. Awesome
Would you mind at all if I did a small painting from it? It would make great practise (I need to start painting big cats) I understand if you would rather I didn't!

The only thing I ask is that you put a link to my original picture in your notes. I'm just so glad you like my shot that much. I looked through your gallery; you have a wonderful talent for painting. I can't wait to see how this drawing turns out.
