Description Name: Mogera
MONARCH Codename: MYSTERIAN
Scientific name: Terebroprovoskida lagoura (burrowing drill proboscis)
Height: 50 meters (not counting fin)
Length: 155 meters
Diet: Extreme Omnivore
Affiliation: Major Kaiju (Neutral)

Overview: Beneath Kamakura, Japan, the mole monster, Mogera, slumbers. This unusual creature attacked the villages around Kamakura in 1957, and inspired the infamous failed GDF mecha MOGUERA.

History: Mogera first came from the stars, though why he was roaming space is unknown. Most think that Mogera hails from another planet that dramatically exploded with such force that it launched him off, as the mole monster actually lacks the oxygen sack system that allows most alien Kaiju to breathe in space, though of course the absurdity of this theory is frequently acknowledged. That said, it is the best idea we've had on Mogera's origins (which really says something). The mole monster possesses traits from a variety of animal classes, including synapsids, reptiles, mammals, birds and amphibians.
When Mogera landed in 1957, we had to pass him off as a large meteorite. He'd landed dangerously close to the village of Kiyokawa, and when he awoke he would actually end up destroying a building within it (fortunately nobody was inside) just through being curious. Fortunately, Mogera would eventually leave Kiyokawa due to the JSDF engaging him in combat, which, though hardly a problem for Mogera, was irritating enough to convince him to leave. After this incident, all of the people who witnessed Mogera were sworn to absolute secrecy. The mole monster then roamed the Japanese countryside for a few years, kept away from cities through MONARCH providing him with more food in the wilderness, before running afoul of Shinomura in 1959 and engaging in a vicious fight with it just outside of Kamakura. Eventually, poor Mogera was defeated and barely managed to escape into the Hollow Earth with his life before going into dormancy. Shinomura was lured away from Kamakura via a recording of Mogera's roars, and an Outpost was constructed around the Hollow Earth tunnel that Mogera slept in.

Powers, abilities and weaknesses: As his title implies, Mogera is a superb burrower, able to use his drill-like proboscis to burrow through rock and dirt alike. This same proboscis actually sucks up the minerals that Mogera feeds on before absorbing them, reinforcing the mole monster's body through spreading the minerals through-out his skin, which makes Mogera more durable and, in the case of his heavily biolithic claws and proboscis, a more powerful burrower and combatant. Mogera's melee weaponry has little else apart from his claws and proboscis, his only other option when fighting up close and personal being charging at enemies. The mole monster had some more unusual tricks up his sleeves, however. He was a fairly effective absorber of thermal energy, though only used it to scorch his enemies through heating the air around him and his skin and never even tried to utilise any plasma, and it is unknown if he could even perform such a feat. Mogera also has a silicon-like substance over his eyes, allowing him to reflect and refract light into lasers like so many other Kaiju. Though not the most powerful Kaiju, Mogera was still a fairly competent opponent.
Mogera's main weakness was his low speed when walking. Though fast and even somewhat graceful underground, he is slow and clumsy when moving up on the surface, and he relies on the substance over his eyes to prevent being blinded by sunlight.

Personality: Mogera was curious and eager to explore the new world he found himself in, as there were so few Kaiju active during the time he was awake he encountered virtually no threats (apart from Shinomura, obviously). Whether he would be just as curious now in a world with many more monsters is unknown, though Mogera seemed to favour underground than the surface despite his intrigue of it.

Relationships: Mogera had no Kaiju allies or significant enemies, so it will be interesting to see what relationships he will forge when he awakens.
Most ignore Mogera, but the GDF apparently found him very interesting. MOGUERA was heavily based on Mogera, and the GDF even requested for Mogera to be killed and his body to be used as the basis for MOGUERA's. MONARCH disagreed to such a callous notion, and, miraculously for the time, the world's governments agreed, siting that Mogera should at least be observed in the modern age of Kaiju for a significant length of time before being put down. The GDF were forced to back off, and many members are now bitter towards MONARCH as our refusal to grant their request resulted in MOGUERA's failure and thus may have unintentionally started the downwards spiral into genetically modified Kaiju. Though we accept that we may have had a hand to play in the horrific events of 2016 (and we are truly sorry for it) why on Earth the GDF didn't design a Mecha based around an already deceased Kaiju is completely unknown (and has been something they've refused to comment on the many times they've been asked).

Main Character Inspiration: Mogera (the original Moguera, I consider it a different monster to the Heisei MOGUERAhence I call it Mogera), Godzilla Island's Proto-Moguera (basically Mogera in the same universe as the Heisei MOGUERA), concept art of Mogera depicting it as an organic mole-like monster and the Godzilla: The Series cancelled monster called Moguera
Appearance inspirations: The aforementioned organic Mogera concept art, concept art of the Godzilla: The Series Moguera and my own imagination

Godzilla Island, The Mysterians, Mogera/Proto-Moguera and MOGUERA belong to Toho
Godzilla: The Series belongs to Tristar
Shinomura belongs to Warner Bros

I’m assuming you find his design to be a bit ridiculous (which admittedly it rather is)?

It's ridiculously clever.  Especially since most fans, including myself, seem to favor the Heisei Moguera.  I think it was originally supposed to be something like this too

Thank-you! This is actually based mostly on mole-like concept art of the original Mogera, which portrayed him as an organic monster rather than a Mecha.
I actually prefer Mogera over MOGUERA (I consider them different monsters similarly to how the different Mechagodzillas are different characters) mostly because of how oddly adorable it is.
The Heisei Moguera is in the Age of Kaiju universe...but not for long. Here’s the link to it, the description is fairly short so you should be able to find out what exactly happened to it fairly quickly: Age of Kaiju: MOGUERA

Yes. The other one you guessed correctly is up next, who will be the last Major Kaiju I cover in AoK before the Kaiju ecosystems and the artificial Kaiju.

Interesting take on the original Moguera.

Thank-you! It’s weird to think that this is what we could have gotten in the actual movie (minus the stalk eyes, those are taken from the GtS Moguera concept art).

Hey, at least you managed to differentiate the Showa version from its Heisei counterpart in the most clever way possible!
