Originally I had a big fancy description I was gonna write for this lad but since I kept overthinking it I’m just gonna be a bit more chill lmao. I’m sure most of you need no introduction to Allosaurus but just in case I’ll give you guys the rundown! The specific species I’ve used here, Allosaurus jimmadseni, is the most recently described and (so long as you don’t count Saurophaganax lmao) largest member of the Allosaurus genus, and is the species to which the famous Big Al (an almost complete subadult Allosaurus skeleton discovered in Wyoming) is currently assigned. Fossils of A. jimmadseni have been recovered from Utah, Wyoming and Colorado, and if the distribution of other Allosaurus species are anything to go by it was likely widespread across the western United States. Allosaurus mostly preyed on the various sauropods, stegosaurs and ornithopods with which it shared its environment, using its powerful jaws to strip the flesh off their bones in a similar manner to modern day hawks. It also co-existed with other large predatory theropods such as Ceratosaurus and Torvosaurus, and it's likely that each of these carnivores had slightly different niches or activity spans to avoid competing with each other (a phenomenon called niche partitioning which is observed in plenty of other modern and prehistoric ecosystems). Some of you may recall Allosaurus using its top to strike its prey like a giant hatchet in Planet Dinosaur or hunting in packs in Walking with Dinosaurs, though unfortunately both of these ideas have been challenged in recent years: a 2021 paper by Antón, Sánchez, Salesa and Turner gave an alternative theory that Allosaurus' terrifyingly wide gape instead gave it a deadly muscle-powered bite, and though we've found sites which seem to preserve mass gatherings of Allosaurus (such as the Cleveland Lloyd Quarry) there is some debate as to whether these represent group-living or not (not least because some of the bones recovered from these sites bare signs of cannibalism such as Allosaurus tooth marks). In-game Allosaurus would be a mostly solitary animal that prefers large, open enclosures. It can be very dangerous towards your guests if you're not careful (I think it's probably just the right size to consider us as food and, according to some studies, it would probably be able to outrun and overtake most people fairly easily) but so long as your Allosaurus remains happy and healthy and you use the appropriate levels of security to keep it contained it should be a successful addition to your park!
So some of my watchers may recall a previous project I tried my hand at called Prehistoric Safari, which was basically me trying to draw up a roster for a hypothetical prehistoric park-building game. You can kinda consider this a second attempt at that concept lmao, just like that this is gonna be a more chill thing I just do when I want to as I’ve always liked dinosaur park builder games and whilst I enjoy the likes of Prehistoric Kingdom and JWE2 I feel all of them have certain aspects I dislike so doing my own take on the concept might be fun. Unfortunately all the good names for this sort of thing are already taken so it took some time to decide the current title (and even then I might change it later lmao). I wasn't 100% sure on posting this at first or in this manner but I was really, really pleased with how this guy turned out so I decided to do so! This rendition of Allosaurus is easily the best dinosaur I've ever drawn imo, albeit the colours did turn out rather like FredtheDinosaurman 's take on the genus (which was completely unintentional on my part lmao, I based them mostly on lions as I figured modern large Savannah predators were the best point of reference for Allosaurus' colours). I'm not really doing these in a set order and don't really have a set idea for the roster just yet (I think I end up constraining myself a bit too much when I focus on that and I think coming up with a roster for this more organically will be a fun little experiment lmao), though I do think I will be arranging them in terms of dig site (so Morrison Formation first). Same goes for plants, mechanics, maps ETC, the mechanics especially I’m not quite sure on just yet, I like the creativity more complex games like Planet Zoo give you but I find relatively simpler stuff like JWE2 and Let’s Build a Zoo to be less overwhelming (albeit a bit more constrained). The aesthetic for the animals is gonna be my usual accurate with speculative traits and treating them as animals rather than monsters though, I do apologise to those of you who like more inaccurate takes but I much prefer seeing these animals like they actually were if that makes sense. I hope you guys like this!
