Moor and Moorish (Italian and Spanish: moro, French: maure, Portuguese: mouro, Romanian: maur) is used to designate an ethnic group speaking the Hassaniya Arabic dialect. They inhabit Mauritania and parts of Algeria, Western Sahara, Tunisia, Morocco, Niger and Mali. In Niger and Mali, these peoples are also known as the Azawagh Arabs, after the Azawagh region of the Sahara.[18]

In modern, colloquial Spanish, the sometimes pejorative term "Moro" refers to any Arab[citation needed].
This identification of Islamic people as Moros persists in the modern Spanish language spoken in Spain, and as Mouros in the modern Portuguese language.

In 711 CE, the now Islamic Moors conquered Visigothic Christian Hispania. Their general, Tariq ibn-Ziyad, brought most of Iberia under Islamic rule in an eight-year campaign. They moved northeast across the Pyrenees Mountains, but were defeated by the Frank Charles Martel at the Battle of Poitiers in 732 CE.
The Moorish state fell into civil conflict in the 750s. The Moors ruled in North Africa and in most of the Iberian peninsula for several decades. They were resisted in areas in the northwest (such as Asturias, where they were defeated at the battle of Covadonga) and the largely Basque regions in the Pyrenees. Though the number of Moor colonists was small, many native Iberian inhabitants converted to Islam. According to Ronald Segal, by 1200 CE, some 5.6 million of Iberia's 7 million inhabitants, nearly all native inhabitants, were Muslim.[13] In the late 15th century, the persecution of Muslims and forced conversion to Catholicism caused a mass exodus.
In a process of decline, the Al Andalus had broken up into a number of Islamic-ruled fiefdoms, or taifas, which were partly consolidated under the Caliphate of Córdoba.

The Asturias, a small northwestern Christian Iberian kingdom, initiated the Reconquista (the "reconquest") soon after the Islamic conquest in the 8th century. Christian states based in the north and west slowly extended their power over the rest of Iberia. Navarre, Galicia, León, Portugal, Aragón, Catalonia or Marca Hispanica, and Castile began a process of expansion and internal consolidation during the next several centuries under the flag of Reconquista.

In 1212, a coalition of Christian kings under the leadership of Alfonso VIII of Castile drove the Muslims from Central Iberia. The Portuguese side of the Reconquista ended in 1249 with the conquest of the Algarve (Arabic الغرب — Al-Gharb) under Afonso III. He was the first Portuguese monarch to claim the title "King of Portugal and the Algarve".

Oh and an article of late Oct. 2013 said that a Spanish professor (as in Spaniard not, teacher of Spanish) was banished from Bulgaria for defending the Ottomans!!! XD

Like I said, the Spanish are re-learning their past and are coming to terms with it. And I guess it helps how close relations Spain, the Middle East and Turkey all have, huh?

Anyway, I thought it was hilarious given how many centuries the two were enemies and now some Spanish professors are defending the Ottomans!

Awwww....this is heartbreaking as Ottoman exlains what happened to Iberia. And you know...it's even heartbreaking in hindsight when you remember what Ottoman said to Spain in the Hetalia English dub, "Who knows? You might like big hats and flowy clothes." Considering that Spain only just finished expelling the Moors. But when he doesn't reply back to that, I took that as my headcanaon that part of him DID like being ruled by the Moors. Granada was fairly tolerant.

which episode was that? woah I didnt know,

actually we Muslims are required to be good to Christians because of the Actiname of Muhammad, a pledge that hold us to respect Christian and their place of worship.

I dont understand why other people see Muslims as either terrorist, intolerant or savages. sigh..

I think it was the dubbed version of Hetalia World Series Ep. 24. Yeah...I don't know if the dubbed writers meant for it to have the double-meaning, but it made the scene all the more heartbreaking.

Yeah! I know. I met so many good Muslims and it breaks my heart that many Westerners still have a skewed idea of them. ál-Andalus and the Ottoman Empire were fairly tolerant at least when it came to religion. (Better than the Christians were)

I know...I went to Morocco and absolutely loved it! The food was amazing, the art and architecture wonderful and the people so wonderful, open, and kind.

It's a bit wierd for Portugal to have these memories of Al-Andalus when Spain was with him longest...

I think you mean several centuries

And this is just a personal opinion, but it always annoys me when people only draw Port and Spain to represent "old Iberia". There were other kingdoms too, which can still be felt in Spain's house (someoften try kicking him in the gut)
Just my 2 cents

I'm sorry, Birvan, but there's just too many kingdoms to draw and make characterization of all of them (Aragon, Asturias, Glacia, Leon, etc). Lets have them represented by Spain cough*Castile*cough if you don't mind ^-^

Yeah, Castilla, Aragon, Asturias, Leon, Granada,…
There were once a lot of kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula.

And technically there still are. Spain is not an actual nation, but a group of nations that came together under Castile's rule
That's why Spain's house seems to fall apart sometimes. A few of his siblings aren't quite agreeing with him and want to be independent again

P.S: Port is the weird one. Despite having many distinctive regions, each with their own subcultures, none of them dream of calling themselves anything else but portuguese

I just came from vacations in spain (barcelona) and the guys there hate the remaing spanish, they are rude to you if they think you are spanish... but if you are, for example, portuguese, they'll shake your hand (and you go "WTF? so now that i'm portuguese you are nice to me?")

It was an interesting thing to witness...

Honestly it doesn't surprise me. Aragon, Catalonia, Basque, and others resent Spain to the point of wanting to become independent again. And of course being Portugal the only one who escaped Spain's grasp they're friendly towards him

Speaking of which, a little joke I've once heard
How does a portuguese gets a day off from work while in Spain? He just needs to approach a basque and say "You're really spanish!" (he then gets punched out so badly he ends up in the hospital)
