It's our most useful tactic
If you want to mass enslave and conquer 500 million people, either get the British or the Dutch, they're the experts (Spain if you can't find either or America after their civil war fiasco)

..................
You know, if you are not joking around that comment just now is really offensive.
Oh you know, considering all the killings and animosity still going on between Muslims and Hindus in South Asia because of Britain's divide and rule tactics in India's Partition. Just so you know 2 million Muslims and Hindus died. it's really REALLY hard to reconciliate even until now.
Bloody Brilliant Tactics Britain.

I know, I'm being sarcastic, not to worry.
To be honest, There's few people in this country genuinly sorry for the atrocities committed during this time. Mostly people either turn a blind eye, apologise and move on, or have no idea.
Seriously, we learn absolutely NOTHING about this in British schools, everything is either on Euro-centric wars (Seven years, World wars 1 and 2, Bosnia etc...) or on problems in other countries (American and Spanish civil wars etc...) so it's genuinely surprising the amount of people that know nothing about this.
What's really annoying are the Jingoistic empire loving old people that live near me. Some of the stuff they say... Christ it's painful.

ah don't worry, I know you are being sarcastic, Brachio30. It's just.. there's still probem left here and there after colonialism and sometimes those things strikes a nerve.
Yes, I am aware of the history lesson taught in some high school Britain, my cousin lived there for sometime. It's disappointing that the history lesson doesnt mention much about colonialism. It's very frustating if said people than start bad mouthing about the country who suffer colonialism just because of their ignorance. Oh you know, people like Geert Wielders for example. (that Dutch politician bad-mouths Indonesians)
There are some Jingoistic old people around where you live? funny, do they ever know about the dark side of British empire.

Most likely they don't. Really they still think we're top of the world/calling the shots/powerful enough to take on Europe, beat up America and then still have time left for tea.
It's even worse with the renewal of the Falklands Fiasco over here. Really not looking forward to another war over a group of Islands that has only three natural resources: Sheep, Penguins and Land Mines.

Isn't the Falkland Islands a secrecy jurisdiction / one of those infamous tax havens? I thought that that was the reason why people would fight over such a tiny island with little resources.
Or is this an issue of ocean territory? I hear that the Japanese-Korean conflict over Takeshima/Dokdo is really about how the ownership of the tiny island changes the oceanic boundaries of the countries. (In that case I agree with the one Japanese guy who thinks that the island should be blown up to settle the conflict, btw.)

It's more a historical claim than economic reasons (the only natural resources on the islands are Sheep, Penguins and Land Mines).
Argentina had a colony for a bit then gave up, as did the Brits, then they came back, and gave up. Then the Brits came back again and established a permanent settlement which Argentina still claims (and the government whips out to calm the population in the wake of a financial/social crises).

I always assume that political/historical reasons are always used to justify economic reasons, imo. But ok, thanks for your info.

brachio30 In reply to dinosaurusgede [2012-08-07 15:30:27 +0000 UTC]
It's a very, very long story
Basically several countries had colonies there at some point that were then abandoned.
France, Spain, Britain and the United Provinces (later the Argentine Confederation and finally Argentina) all had colonies at one point. Because of this former colony Argentina still claims sovereignty whilst the British claim sovereignty as, well, the Islanders themselves are British and wish to remain that way.
But I shalln't continue without causing a flame war xD

this belief you say Netherlands, is underestimated. Japan will become one of the largest Asian power in the world, large and powerful enough to defeat Russia during the Sino-Japanese war...
Although, this event will happen for like many years in the future...

EternalEmpress In reply to Kaigaazuko [2012-08-05 21:50:53 +0000 UTC]
Today, the largest Asian power is China, followed by Japan (I think. I based this on their GDP). Japan's achievements in the later years were very amazing for he had coped with the advancements of the European powers and defeat Russia in the Sino-European War. But, at the colonial years, I think Asians were discriminated.

Now that you mention it..I can see how the European powers got to expand their colonies world wide. Everyone's just using this strategy..
..like how the Spaniards heightened the tension between Christians from Luzon and Visayas and the Muslims from Mindanao so they can use christianized Filipino soldiers to fight the Muslim people.
well, that's on a lower scale, but to think they'd use it to conquer the whole asia?

ah yes, European power alone is unable to swallow the whole world. They would need dispute between the nations. After both sides are wasted from the war, they'll conquer the nation. It's sad but true..
