Origins and Meaning: Egyptian; "foremost of noble women"

Species: Panthera leo - African lion

D e s c r i p t i o n

Height: 50"
Weight: 287 lbs - a little thin
Build: Very large and sturdy for a lioness, Hatshepsut is built for power rather than stealth or agility. She is a tank, with heavy musculature and blocky features that make her suited for hunting among the largest and strongest prey. Much like the rest of her body, Hati's face is long and thick, and her warm golden eyes sit deep under a solid brow. Her pelt is a warm tan, and is lightly dotted with cubspots that never faded all the way.

Scent: Dry grass

Voice: While it was once strong and melodic, Hatshepsut's injury has left her voice thin, raspy, and breathy. She may only speak at low volumes, but her voice is still deep and comforting.

Scars: Many - most obtained through various hunts and skirmishes with rogues along the borders of her old pride. Her large throat scar is the result of being gored by a water buffalo.

Defining features: Freckling across her muzzle and cheeks, patch of darker fur across her shoulders.

Rarities/disabilities:

Mannerisms: TBA

Wise // Honourable // Loyal & Dependable // Prudent // Aloof & Haughty // Critical // Severe // Curt

In her many years, Hatshepsut has taken up the persona of a wise guardian - an aunt from whom you can always get advice. She has a deep understanding and respect of her world, and has grown familiar with the comings and goings of the savannah around her. At her base, Hatshepsut is an honourable lioness who values her integrity and conscience. Once devoted to a cause or person she is unerringly loyal, and will not turn back from the promises that she has made. Among the things that bother her most is those who act without thinking - she knows as well as any that rash moves can lead to severe consequences, and believes that it is always worth the wait to think ahead. It is for this reason that she is always mindful of how her deeds may impact her future and the future of those around her.

Hatshepsut is aloof, and is difficult to make close friends with. Much of her time is spent in solitude and silence, and while she cares deeply for others she is also known to (usually) leave them to themselves. A shining jewel among her family back home, While never cruel or unjust, Hatshepsut is known to be critical in her judgement of others, and is swift and severe in her punishment of those who do not meet her standards. To her, the punishment must always be fitted to the crime. At times she can seem cold and rather frightening; she is a stern teacher and companion, who will not stand for insolence or poor behaviour. For better or for worse, Hatshepsut tells it as it is. She views attempts at vague acknowledgement as a waste of her hard-earned breath, and thus sees no point in being anything other than curt. Of course, this has led to her coming off as rather rude at times.

[more detail is TBA]

Born to a familial pride far to the north of Wethu, Hatshepsut grew and lived as any normal lion would. Her father, Harkhuf, held a small but bountiful territory deep in the heart of the savannah, and he had worked hard to foster respect among the creatures which shared his land. As the eldest of her litter but fourth-born overall among her parents' children, Hatshepsut was raised under the loving guidance of her three older sisters, as well as her aunts and other siblings. The land in which they lived provided for them well, and throughout her early life Hatshepsut knew little of want.

While she loved her whole family, Hatshepsut grew particularly close with Set, her only brother and dearest littermate - and in time the two of them grew to be the pride's best defenders. She was the rough-and-tumble type, never shying away from a good spar and always willing to get her paws dirty. She was slower than her sisters and aunts, but was nonetheless a powerful and precise hunter who proved herself to be a great asset to the pride.

Their youth passed by without incident, but tragedy was to befall Hatshepsut in her third year. On what should have been a routine trip to the river, some unknown force compelled her and Set to wander away from their family - and straight into the arms of danger. The twins came upon a herd of buffalo, and Set, always the jokester of the family, saw an opportunity to have a little fun. Too slow to stop him, Hatshepsut watched on as her brother pounced towards the buffalo, and as the animals grew frightened by his approach. What happened next is but a flash in her memory - the sound of a struggle and something hitting the mud, her body flying into action, a searing pain that tore through her neck... and then nothing.

It is by the grace of some unknown being that Hatshepsut's aunts heard the commotion and came to find her, barely clinging to life. Set was not so lucky, and the family had no choice but to leave his body to grow cold along the riverbank. Hatshepsut was brought back home, and for a fortnight she flitted in and out of consciousness, her family unsure if she would survive. But if Hashepsut was anything, she was a fighter, and soon the worst of the pain seemed to pass, and the lioness started regaining her strength. In time she was fully healed - a miracle, as her mother said - although the damage done to her vocal chords seemed irreversible. Hatshepsut adapted to this quick, however, thankful that she had never been the vocal ones among her siblings.

Adapting to the loss of her brother did not come so quickly, however. In spite of what her family said, Hatshepsut was unable to shake the feeling that his death was her responsibility - that had she acted earlier none of this would have happened. In time she stopped mourning, but Hatshepsut never again spoke of the day.

It is a fact of life that nothing can last forever, and it was inevitable that the pride's peaceful existence would come to an end. That end ultimately came two years after Hati's accident. Age was catching up to Harkhuf, and it only took one strike of lighting to bring his world crashing down - the savannah was alight in a burning inferno, and the elderly patriarch was one of those who could not outrun the flames. With their territory decimated and their leader dead, the pride was forced to move on - away from their old home, away from the comforts which they had all come to know.

The pride dwindled slowly over the next two years, as many of Hati's sisters and aunts chose to go off in search of other lions... or passed away as Harkhuf had. Hunting became more and more difficult the fewer bodies remained, and soon hunger became their constant companion.

Ultimately, Hathor too passed, the travellers' life proving too much for the elderly lion to withstand. With the death of her mother, Hatshepsut finally found herself truly alone, and had to quickly learn how to get on as a solo party - a rogue wandering aimlessly without place nor purpose. She continued on like this for a year slowly losing more and more hope that she would ever thrive again.

Eventually, an ailing Hatshepsut heard tell of a place called Wethu, and a pride there that could be a fantastic place to rest her aging bones. For days and nights on end she travelled, until the great Wethu River stood before her, and she knew she had found safety. She knew the king here to be fair and just, just as she knew that the sight of her upon their borders must have been utterly pathetic. Although she was but a shade of her former self, Vimbue took Hatshepsut in and nurtured her back to health, and she has since vowed to protect them until the day she drew her last breath. At times Hatshepsut is still unsure of her new surroundings and the lions with whom she is now connected, but is undyingly thankful to the pride which saved her life.
