I love this picture, but Lassie is a girl, her name means girl

Although Lassie or Lass means girl, all of collies that have played Lassie have been male.
Males tend to be larger and have a fuller coat [where females would "blow" their coat every heat cycle, males only do so once a year] which allowed young actors to play alongside them for longer, and giving them a more heroic look.
