Description I am not afraid of dying, because I know death doesn't exist
- from "El Topo", by Alejandro Jodorowsky.

I really hate putting this into the "art" section... but it just didn't seem to fit anywhere else. You know, people jumps too quickly into calling themselves "artists" and stuff... so it would go against my principles to put this photo in here. But you know what they say... if it itches, you gotta scratch...

You don't need a description for this work because whatever I may have to say about it surely isn't as interesting as to hear what you have to say about it.

photoshop: contrast tweaking & framing. nothing more.

I was originally looking for things pertaining to the band 'Dead Can Dance' and I found this. I actually really like this photograph, and how it incorporates so many contrasting things, from the vibrant poses, full of life, contrasting obviously with the skulls in a metaphor about living and dying, to how the artistic set-up contrasts with the harsh, bare architecture of the space they are in.

I really didn't know there was a band called "dead can dance" until I posted this and someone else mentioned them. I guess I'll have to look into that one.

And, thanks for the comment. It's very appreciated

The Day of the Dead! Yeah, the game * b33lz3bub was referring to is Grim Fandango, it’s an adventure games set in the Land of the Dead and is a mix of Aztec and Mayan art, Mexican folklore and film noir. The people in Grim Fandango are modelled on those Mexican costumes, they’re called calaveras aren’t they? Make sure you check Grim Fandango out if you’re interested, it’s brilliant I think. It’s very smoky, bluesy and very Mexican, it’s also hilarious .

Anyway, enough of that, I really like this photo, I love the powerful contrast between black and white and then the small splashes of colour, the vivid red of the flowers and the muted pale browns. I think that you could crop it more though because at the moment it’s very open on three sides. If you cropped down onto the left skeletons hat and then also up to his pants, I think that would be better compositionally, it would be a bit more condensed and hence more intimate.

Dead Can Dance!
fronted by Brendan Perry (i hate that guy) and Lisa Gerrard who has a solo career now. You might have heard her on movie scores like The Gladiator and The Insider (the "Sacrifice" song)

Hmmm...This picture reminds me of a kind of festival I learned about, called "Day of the Dead" when figures and other festive things are made to remember the dead. Am I right? Or is the picture just an idea you came up with?
Either way, I like it very much.

Actually, this photo was taken last year, during the day of the dead. This figures were decorating the main hall of a mall. I just happened to be there to take the photo. But you can find this kind of things all over the city - all over the country, actually - when the "dia de muertos" arrives

chlo92 In reply to disintegration [2004-09-07 16:57:29 +0000 UTC]

I see. I would very much like to see the festival! I hope to when I'm older. Death is a subject needed o be celebrated. I don't mean we should celebrate that people have died, I mean I think it's a wonderful way of remembering the dead.

Well, our day of the dead festival pretty much coincides with Halloween... the difference is that, while during Halloween people dresses like ghosts and adorns their house to scare away the spirits that wanders on earth; we adorn our houses and put an alter to *invite* the spirits that wanders on earth. It's a whole metaphorical thing... on the alter we put food, of all types and flavors, so the dead can come and eat it. We, the living, do not touch the food until after the 5 days pass. And oddly enough (due to actual spirit intervention or mental auto-suggestion), all of the food has no taste when you attempt to eat it. That's just one part of the whole festival.. there's much more to it.

You should definately come to Mexico. There is a whole popular cult in here devoted to death, to the point death it is considered a saint, "la santa muerte". Then we have death references on our local expressions, names, places, history, etc, etc. I've read of many cultures that paid tribute to death, but I swear that Mexico is definately the most fascinating of them all.

Yes, I definately agree. I shall go when I can, definately. I also like how much the people believe in paying tributes to the dead.An utterly perfect way of respectin the diceased (sp?) It's a shame we don't have it over here in the UK...then again, this is hardly a Festive Country.
Thanks for the info, and I may well watch you in the near Future,
Regards, ChloΓ©.

Probably one of the best photos I've seen in awhile.
First of all the Quality is impecable, the colour scheme although simplistic makes the shot all the more interesting. And as for the figures, there isnt really anything i can say but wow..placement, expression and the feel of a flowing movement from each one definately catches my eye.

Wonderful Photo

Thank you, I'm glad you like it

I've often wondered what merit a photographer has for some images. There's people like JP Witkin who actually builds the set, prepares the actors/corpses he is to use, takes the shot, and then plays with the negative until he gets the image he desired. I'd think his merit is that of coming up with his own imagery. And then there's people like, well, like me... who only walks around with a digital camera, shoots something we found interesting, download the pic onto the computer and play a bit with it on photoshop. I didn't build the skeletons, I didn't arrange them. I was just there to capture the image of something that already was there. No creativity from my side. Now, some may think the photo is good, and I respect that. But I really don't know what merit I have for it Perhaps none. That would be ok, tho.

I think in some cases you are right. But then there are things that one can photograph at a certain angle, or in certain lighting that any other way will not be the same and wont capture the beauty the photographer sees in it. Every angle that a photographer uses captures something another wont, a different aspect, be in a speck of dust or the way the light falls. And I think that is what makes every photographer who has an eye for something unique, the ability to capture an image that wasnt captured any other way but the way they saw it. Then again there are those who just play point and click... I dont think you are one of these people though. You have an eye for capturing the beauty in what you see.
