Description Spirit Week is coming to Sunny Side High, and Twilight Sparkle thrills over its glory, telling the nearby Ying about her days as a male cheerleader when she attended school. Ying tries to change the subject to her concern for her cousin Mei, whom she has noticed has been behaving strangely. She is worried that all her emotions might one day come out the wrong way. At the same time, Mei fights a blob-like creature inside the new guidance counselor's office, but their fight completely wrecks the office and the creature manages to get away. Mei transforms back, but just then, the girls spot her in the wrecked room, confirming what Ying was saying about Mei, but all she is concerned about is her failure to capture the creature. Mei gets in trouble once again.

The new guidance counselor, Mistmane Gothel, retains an optimistic attitude despite her trashed office. The air conditioning in the room is so cold that everyone can see their own breath. Mei remains angry towards her cousin for ratting her out, then Twilight orders her to leave while she decides on her punishment. She praises Ying afterwards to Gothel, saying she is to give a speech for Spirit Week.

Gothel was given her job at Sunny Side High as a motivational speaker and teen therapist to "pep up" the kids in school in time for the speech on Wednesday. Gothel and her assistant Simon show Ying their plans to topple a line of dominoes that spell "Sunny Spirit," the last one of which will trigger the "Spirit Sparklers." Ying, noting Gothel's overly-optimistic nature, thinks Mei will benefit from her.

With a push from Twilight, Mei is given a session with her. Only a few seconds into the session, Gothel already sees the complaints Mei keeps making and claims to her that Ying called her both a "baby" and "loser," to which she retaliates in shock and anger. Gothel gives Mei a pep talk and sends her off.

After Mei leaves, Gothel delightedly sucks up Mei's depression as energy. She and Simon discuss that she absorbs the misery of teenagers to retain her youthful appearance, and to her, Mei is like a "walking spa treatment." Simon (revealing himself as the shapeshifting blob Mei fought earlier) decides to up the ante. Turning into a giant hornet, he goes to wreck havoc.

Mei complains about her cousin's insults to her friends, but Leo doesn't think that Ying would ever say anything like that. She comes over to counsel her, but she is too angry with her and, after her panda sense goes off, making her shiver, runs off, concerning her further. Just then, Simon, in hornet form, comes in to attack and corners Ying. Mei comes to the rescue and takes him outside the schoolyard to fight.

Mei again performs poorly and Simon gets away, causing her to doubt herself once more. Ying, now having witnessed creatures for the first time, is ecstatic to tell Mei. However, when she tells her that night at home, she denies seeing anything. Still concerned for her, Ying calls in her last resort: the parents, who rush in to see what is the matter with Mei. She quickly changes the subject by mentioning that Ying saw a creature, prompting their parents to aim their attention at her and Ming to show off her latest invention, the Portable Lee Magic Peeler, a high-tech suit that "peels creatures magic apart atom by atom".

At school the next day, Ying confronts Mei's friends who, despite her urges, refuse to expose anything secret about her. Bertrand shows up again and wraps Mei's backpack strap around the fire alarm, causing her to accidentally pull it and landing her another session with Gothel instead of Twilight giving her a full month of detention every day. She tries to help her overcome her fear of being called a baby by literally having her put on a baby costume with the use a items such as a diaper, a fancy hat and a sash being dressed as the "Sunny Side Spirit Baby," but Mei says she is more afraid of being called a loser.

Gothel suggests that her true problem is that she cares too much about what other people think. Just then, Tyler and his friends see Mei in her baby costume, and she becomes a laughingstock, further lowering her self-esteem minutes before she get lured out of the office to be seen by the rest of the students of the school.

At an ice cream parlor, Mei talks with her friends about her constant depression. She knows it started when she started seeing Gothel, but rather than feeling better because of her, she has only felt worse. Ying comes over to comfort her, which makes her even more stressed. Simon shows up yet again, and Mei's panda sense goes off and she starts a fake argument with Ying indicating she took her friends. She rushes out of the back door to poof. Ying, concerned, follows her into the back of the parlor and suddenly sees her to poof into panda.

She quickly shouts this revelation to Leo and Msalliecat, but they falsely deny the existence of creatures and suggest that the parents' craziness has rubbed off on her. Ying is now more suspicious than ever of Mei, but now for a different reason ever since she witnessed her transformation to her panda form. Meanwhile, she fights off Simon (now shapeshifted to a wolf), but he gets away once again.

Back home, Ying tries to pinch Mei to make sure she's not a panda. She reacts angrily, but she tells her compassionately that even though she knows she thinks she is pushy, she really cares for her. She nearly relents and tells her about her problems, but ultimately refuses.

At school the next day, nearly every student who has had a session with Gothel is incredibly depressed. Mei in a depression explains that it would be more worse to sit through Ying's speech about putting the letter "I" back in spirit. but when she realizes that she was still happy filled with positivity as she passes by, Mei comes to a quick realization and views photos of her in the baby costume on Msalliecat's PDA, and notices that her breath really was her panda sense trying to warn her and that Gothel had the air conditioning as cold as she did in order to throw her off.

Suspecting Gothel is the one responsible for all the teen depression and might be a creature, Leo and Msalliecat volunteer for a session with her, only to come out depressed as well. Mei enters immediately after and witnesses Gothel sucking up Leo and Msalliecat teenage depression, and overhears her and Simon's plan to vaporize Ying with the Spirit Sparklers, which would cause enough depression to keep the two youthful for all eternity.

Mei ambushes the two, fighting off both of them at the same time (with Gothel revealing her witch form). In the gym, Ying makes her speech to a crowd of depressed teenagers, and Twilight starts the dominoes. Mei, now finally sick of doubting herself (and remarking on how her cousin remained optimistic no matter how many times she gave her the cold shoulder), finally gets the edge in the fight, causing Gothel to lose some of her powers.

Simon intervenes, turning into a ninja to fight. Much to his dismay, Mei automatically aims and captures him in the Thermos, then races off to save Ying just in time as the Spirit Sparklers started act berserk enough to vaporize her. She saves her then takes her to an empty room. Just before she could thank her, the moment was short lived as Gothel takes and corners her, ready to finish her off, but Ying comes in with the Magic Peeler just in time. Using it it to save her cousin, she removes all the layers of skin full of good positive spirits Gothel has, reducing her into a shriveled old lady that she used to be, making her an easy catch for Mei.

Ying eyes her once more before faking a scare towards her, giving her an easy escape. Ying smiles privately, and thinks of telling her that she knows her secret, but decides to wait until she is ready to tell her. She returns to the gymnasium, where all the teenagers have lost their depression and cheer for her, happy she is unharmed. Twilight declares to Ying that everybody has their spirit back and she claims that "they're not the only ones".

Ying is in her room at the Lee Works, watching Mei Lee jump around with a content expression on her face, back in good spirits again.
