Sealed by runes that guard against the escape of its contents, the book's chains are remnants of the restraints used to hold the void at bay during its creation.
Properties of the Codex of the Malefic Vortex:
Vortex of Forbidden Lore: The reader can tap into the abyssal energy to cast "Detect Thoughts" at will, as the codex tears through the veils guarding the minds of others.
Abyssal Gatekeeper: The bearer of the codex can, once per week, use it to open a gateway to the void, calling forth an eldritch entity to aid them or to wreak havoc upon their foes.
Voidcraft Sigils: Spells scribed into this tome are infused with void energy, granting them increased potency, and allowing the caster to ignore half of any resistances the target may have.
Curses of the Codex of the Malefic Vortex:
Whispers from the Beyond: Each time the codex is opened, the archliches' whispers flood the bearer's mind, requiring a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw to avoid succumbing to madness for 1d4 hours.
Void Tether: The user becomes linked to the void. Each time they call upon the codex's power, there is a chance they age 1d10 years as the void saps their life essence.
Malefic Backlash: If the eldritch entity called forth by the Abyssal Gatekeeper is not properly controlled, it may turn on the caster, requiring a DC 20 Charisma saving throw to banish it back to the void.
