Description Fiona shut her eyes in her panic. She tried to control her breathing that was almost hyperventilating and lowered her head to avoid looking directly at Riccardo. She couldn’t bear to see his face.

“I must say, I certainly was not aware that you knew of the Mercury Ruins. How DID you get here?” he questioned with an all-knowing tone, as though he was daring her to lie.

She didn’t answer his question, too petrified to speak. The Mercury Key was still tucked in her boot.

“What were you thinking wondering through a place like this?” he kept on. “You know you shouldn’t be putting yourself at risk in your condition.”

Those words made her let out a sob and her body trembled in his clutches. Her heart was pounding so immensely, she could feel its pulse in her ears.

Not too far away, Leon and Hewie were heading in their direction. Both were positive they had heard Fiona scream. Leon hid at a corner when he heard a man talking. Hewie was on edge. His fur bristled and his mouth opened, baring his teeth with a deep growl. Leon peered around. His eyes enlarged when he saw a man holding Fiona against a cavern wall, trapping her between his arms. He was wearing brown clothing with a hood over his head, concealing his identity. It was familiar... and so was his voice.

An image of a hooded man glaring down at him flashed in his mind, triggering another memory.

“When you’re done scouting, return Miss Belli to the mansion and see to it that you lock her in her chambers. I doubt she will be any trouble but now that the mutt is with her again, I do not want her to attempt another escape...”

It was him. The other man from the entrance hall. He had completely forgotten about him and scolded himself for it. This was the person Krauser meant.

“Well? Answer me, Fiona!” the man commanded.

Leon could see the terror all over her face. She whimpered helplessly and turned her head as far as it could when the man’s leaned in close inches from hers. She was absolutely scared to death of this man. He had to help her. Hewie’s rage was growing as was the volume of his growling. Leon held his hand over his chest to keep him calm.

“Easy—easy there, buddy,” he whispered. “This way.”

He took out his gun, commanding Hewie to follow and snuck forward with every hiding spot they could use. If they could stay quiet, they could get the jump on this guy before he would know they were there.

When Riccardo saw that she wasn’t saying anything, he released her. “Fine. If you will not talk now, you will talk later. We’re going back to the castle.”

Fiona, however, was rooted in her place. It was like she was paralyzed.

“I do have one more question, though...”

She dreaded to hear what it was.

“Why are you wearing the outsider’s coat?”

She shifted uncomfortably. Yet when she was finally brave enough to open her eyelids, Riccardo raised his hand and slapped her hard across her face. Leon was shocked witnessing it, hearing the sound of her cry and the man’s palm striking her cheek. She fell to her knees and Hewie snarled viciously and sneaked faster ahead of him.

“—Hewie!” Leon hissed, hoping this would not alert the man sooner.

Fiona pressed her hand to her stinging red cheek, shaking harder than before.

“At first I presumed the outsider forced you to abide to him because he snatched you from Krauser,” stated Riccardo. “But now I see you are not as obedient as I thought. Must I remind you what happened the last time you disobeyed me?”

The memories of all the bloodshed were oh so clear. “......no.”

“Good. Now get up!”

Leon’s eyes narrowed to her response, like she was ignoring the fact that this man just hit her. He gripped his gun tighter as he and Hewie were getting closer to them.

Nervously, Fiona pushed her hands to the ground to stand and when she lifted her head, she saw Hewie and Leon behind Riccardo and coming fast. He noticed her reaction and turned around.

Hewie prepared his legs to launch at Riccardo but when he was within reach by a few feet, the putrid scent he had smelled from Krauser and the creature invaded his nostrils... and it was coming from Riccardo himself, making his paws skid into a halt while Riccardo moved back to avoid being bitten. The distraction was enough for Leon to pull Fiona up and hide her behind him. It happened so quickly and her shock doubled when she saw him aim a gun straight at Riccardo.

“Freeze!” he yelled.

Fiona almost stumbled over her feet at the sight. She was only granted a second of relief seeing Hewie was well and then looked over Leon to see what Riccardo would do. After he composed himself, his shadowed face smiled under his hood. He was not bothered about having a deadly weapon pointing at him.

“Hold it right there!” Leon threatened when the hooded man took a step forward. “Don’t you know it’s wrong to hit a woman?”

Fiona’s hand covered her mouth. “He saw that...?”

“Who are you anyway?”

Riccardo laughed bitterly. “I am Riccardo, the keeper of Belli Castle. And you must be the Leon Scott Kennedy I’ve heard so much about.”

“Belli Castle?” Leon silently mused. “So you know me, huh?”

“Yes. Leon Kennedy: a special agent from the government of the United States, a survivor of the Raccoon City Outbreak, as well as the outbreak in South America...”

“Raccoon City?” marvelled Fiona.

“...and the one who ended the reign of the Los Illuminados.”

Leon’s eyes sharpened. Obviously Krauser had been doing a lot of talking. Fiona stared at him in awe. Was all of it true? Had he really gone through such ordeals? She knew of the Raccoon City incident, as many did, but had no idea that there were more. And Leon survived them?

Hewie was itching to lunge at Riccardo. He spotted him slowly trying to reach for the pistol behind him and snapped up at him in warning. The mocking amusement faded from his hidden features.

“Now, I do not know what business you have here but I do hate uninvited guests. Hand over Fiona and your death shall be quick and painless.”

“After the way I saw you treat her?” Leon lightly shook his head in defiance. “Nah. I don’t think so.”

Fiona cringed to his response. “Leon, it’s okay. Just go.”

What she said caught him off-guard. “What?”

Riccardo’s lips stretched with pride. “It would be wise not to test my patience. She is my property. I have no time for the likes of you.”

“Your ‘property’!?” Leon repeated, appalled to hear her being referred to as an object.

Fiona gripped her temples, feeling her stress building inside. “No, Leon. Don’t listen to him. For God sakes—DON’T get involved!”

Unbeknownst to Leon and Fiona, someone was approaching from behind. If it were not for Hewie’s acute nose, they would have failed to notice. He spun around and barked. Fiona turned as Leon looked over his shoulder and saw Krauser walking towards them. He was momentarily stunned seeing his unscathed face.

“What the—!? How did you...?”

Krauser only smugly grinned.

“Perfect timing, Krauser,” spoke Riccardo.

The three were now sandwiched as the two waited for them to surrender. Leon kept his gun aiming at Riccardo while Hewie faced Krauser with Fiona between them. Leon’s eyes darted around and sure enough, there was the courtyard to their left. He could see the old water fountain. He then locked eyes with Fiona, who couldn’t tell what he was thinking. When Krauser and Riccardo started to enclose on them, he quickly shoved his gun into his holster, grabbed her hand and made a run for it.

“Hewie, come on!” he called.

The two men instantly chased after them. Sending Fiona in front, Leon flung an antimony which hit Krauser and engulfed him in purple electricity. Riccardo sprinted past and left him there. Leon encouraged her to keep going as they bolted through the courtyard. They were left to choose one of the remaining paths and with little time to decide. In the rush of the moment, they ran towards some stairs west to the debris they entered the ruins with. He made sure they went up first, glancing back briefly. Riccardo was coming straight for them around the fountain. He wasn’t as fast as Krauser yet Leon still ran up close behind his companions.

At the top of the stairs was a bridge over a deep chasm. An audible crack was heard beneath their feet as Fiona and Hewie ran across. When Leon ran across it, the bridge crumbled and fell apart and Leon felt himself falling before he could make it to the other side.

“Leon!” Fiona cried, diving to save him.

She caught his arm just in time, his weight dragging her to fall down to the ground. Both felt the air knocked out of them when she landed flat on her chest and he smacking against the cliff. His head began to hurt after his forehead bumped into it. She gripped his hand for dear life when his arm slipped, trying her hardest to pull him up. He wasn’t a large man but he was heavy for her delicate physique. Leon grabbed one of the rocks yet it came loose, watching it drop all the way down to the stalagmite below. He had to get up before he would fall, and worse, bring Fiona down with him. Hewie yapped as she grunted while she tightened her hold on him.

“FIONA!” they heard Riccardo shout.

Fiona gasped and shot her head up. He was standing on the opposite side in disbelief. Krauser had also caught up after the antimony’s affect wore off.

“What are you doing!?” Riccardo demanded. “Just allow this worthless maggot to fall!”

Leon tilted his head up as he continued to dangle. He could see how frightened she was. At first, he actually thought she might but when she looked down at him, he saw something in her eyes. She was not cold-hearted like this man was. There was no way she could let him die like this. She grimaced to how Riccardo would react, adjusting herself to her knees and strained as she tried harder to pull Leon up again.

“Fiona! Do as I say and let go of him!” objected Riccardo.

Even this was unexpected for Krauser as they stared at her attempt to rescue Leon. He was able to jump great heights but the gap here was too far for him. There was nothing either of them could do.

Leon managed to grab another rock and hook his foot onto other ones, making it easier to climb. Hewie moved behind Fiona and bit the jacket that she was wearing and pulled with his teeth to help. Gradually, Leon gripped the edge of the cliff and climbed over to safety once he got one leg up.

Riccardo flared furiously and whipped out his pistol. Fiona saw this and her eyes widened when he aimed it at Leon, a memory of the same gun pointing at the face of another flashing in her head. While Leon was recovering, she rushed behind him to act as a barrier, staring at Riccardo despite how scared she was feeling. Riccardo was more shocked of this and lowered his gun before he could shoot her by accident. Why was she protecting the intruder?

Fiona felt Leon’s hands tug at her arms to gently pull her to her feet, making her flinch. “C’mon. Let’s get outta here,” he said.

Riccardo was now completely outraged as he and Krauser could only watch the three run away and disappear into the dark void ahead of them.

“You will NOT take her from me!” he screamed at Leon across the distance, his fury booming against the stalactites. “She is mine! THE AZOTH BELONGS TO ME!!!”

The words from the mad man sent a shiver through them yet they kept going until they were long gone. The structure of the place they entered differed to the ancient ruins to more smooth, stone brick-layered walls and floors, much like the castle up top. Far from Riccardo’s and Krauser’s sight, Fiona stopped to catch her breath and Leon stepped beside her.

“Are you alright?” he asked, still troubled about Riccardo hurting her earlier. He reached to examine her but she smacked his hand away when it was right over her cheek.

“I’m fine!” she insisted, walking past him.

“Fiona, your face is still shining like a light bulb. How could you let him hit you like that?”

“Leon—don’t!”

Her head sunk as her shoulders scrunched close to her neck. Hewie could already see the tension rising. He gazed up between the two warily.

“He called you his property!” Leon persisted. “What did he mean by ‘Azoth’ anyway?”

“Just stop it,” she pleaded.

“You can’t expect me to drop it like nothing happened—”

“Leon—ENOUGH!”

He and Hewie almost jumped to her sudden outburst. Her hand clasped over her mouth, ashamed of herself for snapping at him. When things became still, she tried to dismiss the subject by walking on but only made a few steps when he spoke once more.

“Well at least now I know ‘who’ gave you those bruises...” He knew he hit a bull’s eye for she froze on the spot with a faint gasp.

Fiona kept her back to him, not wanting him to see her on the verge of tears.

Leon scowled at himself, feeling bad about what he said. It came out a lot harsher than he intended it to. “Look, I’m just worried about you.”

“You don’t need to be...!”

He sighed. He had been quiet about his knowledge of her long enough. It was about time he told her. “Fiona... I know you’re the girl from the car accident.”

She gasped again a little louder. “...... H-H-How do you know about that?” she asked breathlessly.

“You and your parents were reported missing over half a year ago. Not long after, the bodies of your parents were found in the remains of a car wreck but you were nowhere to be seen. Everyone’s been looking for you ever since. It was all over the news.”

Fiona couldn’t believe what she was hearing. He knew of her all along? With no contact to the outside world, she had no way of knowing what happened for others after she vanished. “People have been... looking for me?”

“Yes,” he replied, hesitating for a moment before giving her the whole truth.

“Actually... the local authorities recently called off the search. They never had much to go on with little evidence and no suspects.”  He was aware of how disheartening it would be to hear the world had lost hope for her, so he added with confidence, “...but your family hasn’t given up. They hired detectives to find you.”

“My family? I haven’t even met any of them,” she said with confusion. “All except...”

“What?” She never met her family? How was that possible?

“......Leon,” she sighed. “I know I haven’t done much to make things easier for you... and for that I am sorry. But it’s complicated. That man, Riccardo, is... dangerous. He has no sympathy or remorse for his actions. It will be better for you to stay away from him. That is all I can say.”

And with that, she carried on walking, declaring it as the end of the conversation. Hewie followed her, pausing for a moment to glance back at Leon, before returning to her side.

Leon frowned as he thought of the picture of her and her parents. Of the way she was smiling with such happiness.

“Fiona... What happened to you?”

What could have happened to bring her to this position? What had taken that smile away? He continued to walk behind them with his eyes glued to her. Fiona Belli and Belli Castle. There was no chance that it was a coincidence, recalling what Riccardo had said.

“I doubt she will be any trouble but now that the mutt is with her again, I do not want her to attempt another escape...”

He was going to get to the bottom of this whether she liked it or not. It was as his gut instincts were telling him since he discovered she was here...

That car accident was no accident.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Fiona walked with her arms crossed over her stomach. This was wrong. It was all wrong. She didn’t expect anything to go specifically to plan but this was the last thing she wanted. Now that Riccardo and Leon have met face to face, everything was bound to get worse than she feared. Riccardo’s wrath would go beyond his limits. What if he hurt Hewie because of this? She had hoped that if she complied with what he said, she could guarantee Hewie’s safety. Yet it was a different case with Leon. If they didn’t find a way out soon, he was a dead man.

She could still remember the crash so vividly. The sounds of the vehicle and glass smashing, she and her parents screaming... It was awful. There was a time when she barely remembered it at first, that it would make her head hurt whenever she tried to. Sometimes she wondered if it would have been better if she never remembered that night at all, along with everything afterwards. God she missed her parents so much. And Leon knew who she was?

Leon couldn’t help but feel concerned about Fiona. They walked without a word passed to one another through a long, empty hallway for less than ten minutes and she was really tense. There must have been a million thoughts going through her head. He wished there was something he could do to help. He opened his mouth to speak until she stopped.

“Leon...” she spoke insecurely before slowly turning half-way to look at him. “If you knew who I was all the time... why didn’t you say anything?”

He stared back and then answered sincerely. “Because I didn’t want you to feel pressured into talking. I thought it wouldn’t have been fair of me to suddenly blurt out everything and throw a bunch of questions at you at once.

She remained quiet, taking in his response. “......”

“So... Now that the ruins plan is a bust, what now?”

“I don’t know. I’m sorry or wasting your time,” she apologised shamefully.

“Hey, come on. It’s not your fault. In fact, the ruins itself was really insightful.”

“...? Wha—”

Hewie started to bark, interrupting her and seeking their attention of what was ahead. Leon and Fiona glanced at each other briefly before tagging along with him to see. Around the next corner, there was a soft light coming from a neatly carved hole in the ceiling of a wide circular room. Under the light were four globes that were exactly the same as the ones Leon saw in the shrine. They looked familiar to Fiona as well. These globes were connected to matching coloured tracks that ended around a circle shaped mirror on the ground. It had a piece of glass wedged into it, which unnerved her.

“Looks like these can be pushed. Let’s see what happens,” said Leon who was inspecting one of them. He pointed to the blue and red globes that were the closest to her. “You take those two and take the other two.”

Fiona let her arms drop to her sides before going to the blue one first, still staring at the mirror. They grunted as they began to push one at a time, Leon starting with the green one that had the longest track. She got hers to the other side first having the shortest track and once it was set in place, it, as well as the mirror, faintly lit up. She went to the next one by the time Leon finished moving his. The green globe and the mirror brightened a little more.

“We’re onto something, here,” he beamed at her.

She didn’t reply, slightly baffled by his cheery banter after their recent argument, and kept pushing. When they got all four around the mirror, a chime rang and the five objects were shining almost as brightly as the light above. The mirror shifted and when Hewie stepped on it, it slowly began to rise as a platform.

She hurried to stand on it with him before it became too high to reach. “Hewie!”

Leon joined them in time. Fiona bent her knees to make sure the glass didn’t cut Hewie and almost lost her balance doing so. He held her waist before she could fall and jabbed his foot against the glass smaller and less of a threat. As he figured, she became uncomfortable with his hand on her, so he removed it to simply hover behind her back, ready to catch her if needed.

She appreciated him being considerate yet it still felt awkward to say the least. When she dared to glimpse up at him, he gave her a supportive wink with a dashing grin. He then looked up to see where the platform was leading them to. It took her by surprise. She knew it wasn’t meant to flirt with her. She just couldn’t understand why he was being so nice after the way she acted towards him. So far he never gave her a right to excuse her behaviour. She didn’t mean to be this way. It wasn’t like her at all. But then again, she wasn’t even sure who she was anymore...

When they reached the top, Fiona was horrified to see where they found themselves.

Four globes and tracks identical to the others beneath the floor stood around the mirror at the end of a large hall. Above it was a shattered glass dome, letting in a cold breeze and the night sky’s pale moonlight. There was a lot of broken glass lying all over the floor. The walls were full of tall arched blue windows that were too thick to see through. Two small chandeliers hung under the glass ceiling. They were back in the castle.

Leon was certain he had seen this place before. Gazing at the piece of glass in the mirror, he remembered the photograph of a smiling impaled woman. This had to be the room she died in. He was about to ask Fiona of it, but was alarmed seeing her holding her head. She looked like she was going to have a panic attack.

“Fiona? What’s wrong?”

Fiona couldn’t hear him. She swore to herself that she would never come back to this room again. All she could hear was the chilling laughter of an unforgettable woman echoing in her head; a maid with lavender hair who stalked her throughout the castle with a long glass sabre in her hand. Her last taunting words were still clear...

“Blood... Flesh... Woman... You vile creature.”

Hewie was distressed seeing Fiona like this, but not even his cries could overcome the haunting memory of the maid.

“You lure the man into your filthy body again...”

Leon stood in front of her. “Hey!”

“...and AGAIN...”

“Snap out of it!”

Fiona took in a sharp breath when his hands grasped her shoulders and just like that, the memories disappeared. There was nothing but silence as her eyelids fluttered and she could see Leon’s steel blue eyes peering into hers.

“Are you okay?”

“Y-yes,” she assured even though her shuddering voice said otherwise and she shrugged herself out of his hold. “I just need to get out of here.”

She dashed past him to a staircase with a damaged banister with Hewie behind her. Leon looked at the mirror shortly before catching up to them. Was Fiona present when the woman died?

A door was open at the bottom of the stairs and Fiona was on the other side holding onto a railing, panting as she forced herself to settle. When he stepped through, he realised they were on the upper floor of the library. He lifted a hand to pat her back but stopped in mid-air and patiently waited for her to recover in her own time.

She let out a long breath and stood upright.

“You cool?” he asked.

“I’m cool...” She turned to apologise again but saw a distinct red colour on his forehead. “-! You’re bleeding.”

“Huh?” He touched his forced and saw a bit of blood smudged on his fingertips after he withdrew it.

She hadn’t noticed it before with his locks hanging over the side of his face. He had a few minor scratches yet this one looked bad with a thin trail of blood trickling to his eyebrow. It must have been from when he bumped against the cliff when he fell. He had to admit he still had a small headache.

“There’s an infirmary not far from here,” she informed. “We could go there for a pit stop and take a look at it.”

“Good idea.”

They walked along the balcony past a grandfather clock through another door and in front of it was a knight suit of armour holding a crossbow. Leon went to go around it down a path of black and red hexagonal tiles, surrounded by broken statues, until Fiona lifted her arm to block him.

“Wait!”

At the back of the knight was a button and she pressed it. A clicking noise rumbled inside the suit.

“This knight is rigged. Step on the wrong tile three times and that crossbow will fire. You’re lucky I just deactivated it. You could have had an arrow in the back of your head by now.”

Leon’s eyebrows rose, realising he almost walked straight into a trap, feeling incredibly stupid. “Whoa... thanks. That would have been dumb of me.”

They went across and entered the next place, which was a spiral stairway much like the one they descended after they met. Only here was a set of three rings that hung in the middle with pillars holding them in place from the ceiling to the pool at the bottom.

The guilt of the maid was still lingering inside of Fiona. It ate at her, among other things that occurred in the castle. She tried to be strong but saw Hewie was keeping a close eye on her. There was no fooling him. She knew she needed to make amends to Leon. She certainly owed him for taking care of Hewie in her absence.

They headed to a door on the middle floor and behind it was a strange draining contraption with pipes and three cubes connected together. She and Hewie preceded Leon up some more stairs through a semi-circled corridor with yet another grandfather clock. Many fire torches decorated the walls. On one side were prison cells with rusty yet sturdy bars. They came to a second machine close to an arched doorway. Through that was a door at a corner of a longer corridor and he realised this was the left side of the area past the labyrinth of a staircase.

“Here it is,” said Fiona who was opening the door.

A privacy curtain was drawn out near it and when Leon pulled it out of their way, he was surprised to see very modern equipment all around them. He was expecting medieval medical items. Shelves were stocked with chemical bottles. There was an X-Ray board on the wall and against another was a stand with plastic containers with a chemical labelled ‘Ethanol’. Beside it were propane tanks. In the corner was a metal storage cupboard. In the centre of the infirmary below surgical lights was a dirty operating table.

“How the hell does a castle like this get this kind of stuff?” asked Leon as she crouched by a sink next to the X-Ray.

“Maybe there’s outside contacts other than Krauser.”

“...That makes sense. What are you doing?”

She answered him by unwrapping something tied to the pipe and revealed another pouch with magnesias and antimonies.

“You got another one?”

“I made a few of these. There should be two or three more hidden elsewhere. That is if Riccardo hasn’t found them.”

Leon folded his arms, seemingly impressed. “Very resourceful. You’re pretty smart.”

She blinked, uncertain of what to make of his compliment. She went to tie the pouch around her waist but the jacket would have made it difficult.

“Oh, umm...” she took it off and gave it back to him. “Thanks... for letting me borrow this.”

“No problem,” he reassured, putting it back on.

They started to check the infirmary for anything they could use when out of nowhere, Leon’s radio screeched, startling all three of them. Leon picked it up from his pocket. He and Fiona stared at each other in perplexity. Someone was trying to call him. Who could it be?

Leon held the screen up to face him answered it...

This is really nicely written. I feel so sorry for Fiona. No wonder she doesn`t trust anybody after all what happened to her. You portrayed Fiona`s character very well here, she is
almost constantly afraid but still brave when the situation calls for it.
I also love the flirting going on between the two XD

But yes, you guys werent the only ones. Certainly a unique ending considering 'bad endings' in general but holy crap it was shocking seeing what had happened to Fiona. Someone so strong-willed and determined. Like... what the hell did Ricc do to break her down like that (apart from the obvious)? D:
