Description Maximus is struttin' his stuff!

This drawing is a request from ~Vevanak who has watched this drawing come into being (like a hawk, mind you) over the past few live broadcasts on my Livestream Channel. This character is from the Temeraire series. Cookies for anyone who has read it! I really like the result and I think I'm finally getting the hang of those colored pencils! He's very shiny.

9x12 Bristol Board
Colored Pencils
Lots and lots of time

Vev has bought the original, but I am making prints of this piece (even on metallic paper).

Oh good! You put the word 'strut' in the first sentence in your description. Becuase that was literally the first word that came to mind when I saw the thumbnail of this. Very good job putting some attitude in the picture.

Whee shiny!
The colors and the musculature are really well done and I love his facial expression. The anatomy of the wings and how they attach to the body really shows some thought went into it.

Thanks! I really appreciate that! It's always hard making the body parts look like they belong together. That's always the challenge with fictional creatures...

TheRaptor-Wolfy In reply to dittin03 [2009-09-01 23:11:10 +0000 UTC]

Well, that makes my choice a little easier. Did they really "pull" the color from place to place like a smudge effect from Photoshop? It appeared so on the webcam.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dittin03 In reply to TheRaptor-Wolfy [2009-09-02 19:45:56 +0000 UTC]

Lol, I dunno what you thought you saw on the webcam, but I don't think they "smudged" like you were saying. I was doing all the "blending" by using different pressures on the pencils and by going over colors I had already put down. What you might have been seeing was an illusion caused by the frame rate that Livestream is set at to provide a stream the internet could keep up with. The colored pencils definitely don't flow like a PS smudge tool or like wet paint. Though they are of higher quality than most colored pencils, they are still simply just that: pencils.

TheRaptor-Wolfy In reply to dittin03 [2009-09-02 22:56:57 +0000 UTC]

Okay. That answers my question then. It was really cool looking, it did appear as if it took it with it. But the blending was great, I can't get more then two colors to blend with mine, and I'm wondering if it's my paper ... I went out and bought some Bristol Vellum ... I didn't think I'd be able to get any blending on the Bristol Smooth.

Maximus the regal copper! I LOVE that series <3 But my mom won't buy anymore of the books ;-;

Excellent work on his wings, the lighting is magnificent! I adore the shading you used on the scales, it makes them look very realistic and shine <3

I'd never think I'd see him of all creatures in my inbox, but I'm very happy to see that you drew him, and so well enough to be recognized easily at a glance

You also kept the same even coppery color throughout his body, which is definitely something to be proud of ^^
