Meanwhile, here is the text:
Misty the London Pony
Many of the riders tugged the bridle so hard it hurt Misty’s mouth. They kicked her sides to make her go faster. She wanted to please but she’d much rather gallop with the deer like she once did. She wanted to swish flies off a friend’s rump. She wanted to squeal with other ponies. Everyone here lived in stalls. The only place they went was to the muddy riding ring. There was no fresh grass.
One day while she was dragging herself around and around, she noticed a new girl watching her. As she went by, she laid her ears back.
“My name is Emily.” The girl’s eyes looked sad. “I am going to save up all my pocket money and get you out of here. I promise.”
Misty didn’t understand but the girl often came to see her and fed her toffees.
Early one morning, Misty was saddled and bridled and led outside. She hung her head. To her surprise she wasn’t taken to the riding ring.
Emily fetched her instead. She stroked her neck and told her she was pretty.
Misty pricked her ears forward and proudly carried Emily away from the riding ring onto the street. They went many miles passing houses and buildings. Cars whizzed past them. People stared.
“We’re here,” Emily said. “This is Dulwich Park.”
Misty smelled grass. Then they entered a green meadow. She wanted to buck with joy. But she didn’t want to hurt the girl.
Emily took off her bridle and loosened the saddle. Misty got to graze. They even went over to a lake where she got a long cool drink of water.
Emily tightened the saddle and put the bridle back on. She swung herself gently onto Misty’s back.
On a soft sandy trail that went by big flowering bushes, Misty broke into a trot without being asked.
Emily giggled the whole time, thumping up and down on her back, but Misty didn’t mind.
When they got back to the stables, while Emily brushed her, Misty stood quietly in her stall.
Another girl looked over the stable door. "Hello," she said. “I love dapple greys, don’t you?"
"Yes." Emily smiled. "I love her.”
“I do too,” said the other girl happily. “My daddy's going to buy her for me."
Misty felt Emily tense.
"You are really lucky,” Emily said.
Misty wondered why she sounded sad.
"I'm going to take her to Hays Common,” the girl said. “They have big fields where she'll get to be outside. I'll see her every day and take good care of her. You can come and visit her."
When the day arrived for Misty to leave, Misty planted her hooves. She didn’t want to go up the ramp into the horse box. But Emily came over to her and stroked her neck. “You'll be all right," she told her gently. "You're going somewhere better."
A man got behind Misty and tried to push her into the trailer. She wouldn’t go until Emily went inside and offered her a toffee.
Misty clomped up the ramp but ignored the toffee.
When the door clanged shut, she neighed loudly.
On the journey, she shook and almost lost her footing. Her heart beat wildly. After a long time, everything got quieter. The rear door opened, and she was freed into a field.
Several ponies gathered and sniffed her. One swung his rump towards her and playfully mock-kicked. Then they settled down to graze.
The grass was green and it tasted sweet and fresh.
She made friends.
Days flew by quicker than galloping hooves.
One day she smelled toffees. Holding her head and tail high, she trotted proudly over to the gate.
“You look beautiful," Emily said, holding out a toffee in the palm of her hand.
Misty rested her soft muzzle against Emily's face and blew her warm breath upon Emily's cheek. Then she gently took the toffee and galloped away, racing around the field, her neck arched, her ears pricked forward, bucking and showing off, kicking up clumps of earth. At last, she came trotting back to Emily and ate another toffee.
The End
Afterword
It’s true that another girl’s daddy bought Misty. I was very sad my daddy couldn’t afford her, and I had to let her go. I never got to see her again, but I knew she was much better off, no longer having to lug kids around in never-ending circles. I trusted she’d have plenty of space to gallop, fresh grass to graze in the spring, sweet hay in the winter, lots of oats, and lots of love.
