Yep, apparently big rocks go in one end, it spins around, and smaller rocks come out the other. This is just much much bigger than the one you may have played with as a child (see my Aurora series for a sense of scale).
The light was kind of odd that day, sometime around 4pm and this shot was taken facing the west. It seems that mostly direct sunlight was coming in from the far end, giving the wamer colors, and reflected light from cloud cover was hitting the side closer to me, giving it that blueish cast. there wasn't anything particularly interesting visible through the opening, it was intentionally blown out to ensure that detail would be visible on the inside. This was taken with a compact digital (Canon A80) and as such it had a naturally very wide DOF and it's not really easy/practical to move the focal point around. I may redo this shot again with my D70 at some point.
