I've never seen anything like it. A rock tumbler you call it? It doesn't look much like the rock tumbler I had as a kid. I don't know if you inteded it as such, but the lighting casts a blue hue on the right half and leaves the red rusted metal to glow on the left side. Cool color contrast. Your decision to expose for the walls and leave the opening blasted out makes compositional sense. I don't have an advanced critique, but I do have some food for thought. If you were ever to retake this picture, playing with depth of field might yield some interesting results. Widen your aperture and experiment with the focal point.

Yep, apparently big rocks go in one end, it spins around, and smaller rocks come out the other. This is just much much bigger than the one you may have played with as a child (see my Aurora series for a sense of scale).

The light was kind of odd that day, sometime around 4pm and this shot was taken facing the west. It seems that mostly direct sunlight was coming in from the far end, giving the wamer colors, and reflected light from cloud cover was hitting the side closer to me, giving it that blueish cast. there wasn't anything particularly interesting visible through the opening, it was intentionally blown out to ensure that detail would be visible on the inside. This was taken with a compact digital (Canon A80) and as such it had a naturally very wide DOF and it's not really easy/practical to move the focal point around. I may redo this shot again with my D70 at some point.

Thanks for the comment!

Yeah, I had those open as well and was actually going to comment on them last night, but it got to be too late. I'll try to get to them soonish.
