Description
In a hut on the edge of the village, Sweet Feet lay ill in the raging heat of a fever. She had been like this for several days. She woke up fine as usual several mornings ago, but by noon of the same day she had fallen unconscious, her body racked with a mysterious illness the left her on the verge of death.
Fearing potential contagion, most in the village gave the hut a wide berth, too afraid to come close lest they fall ill as well. But not Cade. Cade could never abandon her in such a time of need, no matter the risk.
Cade gazed down at her, a worried look creasing his brows. Sweet Feet had been like a mother to him and he was ever so fond of her. The fever that had come upon had struck so suddenly, without warning, and has left him very worried.
He clutched a rag in his teeth, a rag which he dipped in a bowl of water, dabbing it over her face and paws to help her body cool itself.
She lay on the floor of the hut, cushioned by a blanket to ease her body from the ache that had set into her bones. To help her rest and shield her from the piercing daylight outside, a tapestry had been hung to block the entrance of the hut. Into its fibers was woven an eagle motif, wings spread wide and head held high.
As he replaced the rag into the bowl, Cade looked upon the eagle in the tapestry guarding the door and tried to feel hopeful. All he wanted was to see Sweet Feet get well and he would remain by her side no matter how long it took.
Like an eagle warming its eggs must wait many days for its young to hatch, not knowing when the day would arrive until the cracking of the opaque shell heralded the arrival of new life, so also Cade waited, waiting for the dense veil of fever and illness to lift from his beloved mentor and for a fresh breath of life to enter her.
He knew not how long it would take. He only hoped the time would come soon, for Sweet Feet’s sake. The stifling heat of summer was bad enough, but with the heat of the fever it was surely unbearable. At least the dabs of ice water from the rag were making it a little more tolerable.
Hour by hour, time passed and the sun dipped low on the horizon, never truly setting because of the long summer days. Cade did not once move from Sweet Feet’s side. Nothing could budge him. Though both his mind and his body throbbed with exhaustion, he maintained his solemn vigil, watching and waiting, not willing to miss the moment when Sweet Feet’s fever broke.
The fever would break. Cade was sure of it. It was only a matter of time and patience. Until then, beneath the protective wings of the eagle guarding the door, Cade would watch and Sweet Feet would rest, and he would be there, ever vigilant, when she finally got better.
