Description Ok, some more on our Telion...

As i mentioned in the previous stage, this one is probably one of the most important! Ultramarines are blue...so here is some blue! And, i think you'll agree, he already looks the better for it.

If you've seen my other 2 Ultramarines, you'll know that i dont paint them the bright blue that the GW Studio does...i dont like it much, it doesnt fit my pallette, and i just plain prefer a darker feel...and judging by the comments i've recieved in the past on the previous 2 Marines, this is a look people seem keen on

SO...to start with, i basecoated all the armour with a mix of Regal Blue and Chaos Black...not much black, a spot of it...maybe like a 80/20 ratio in favour of the blue.

Once thats done, i took pure Regal Blue and started highlighting the armour, being careful to apply it where the light would catch the panels. Then i mixed in a little Bleached Bone for the first round of highlights, then a little more. I didnt go too far with this as the blue would start going green! I like Bleached Bone to highlight things, as you may have gathered... in this case, the faint green tinge it gives to the blue works well with the Scaly Green in the previous stages

Next up, shading...fisrtly, i applied a thin wash of Blue Ink mixed with Brown Ink (50/50 ratio) and then added more shadows with just Brown Ink. After a few applications, i took Scorched Brown to further solidify the shadows.

I rehighlighted all the edges and some high points with the Regal Blue/Bleached Bone mix to bring the colour back, and then the damaging begins!

Using Dark Flesh, i added some lines to most of the armour edges, and also painted a few extra scratches onto the flat plates, to add some interest. With damage application, just try to think where the most wear would happen, but also take some consideration as to how small the model is! If you go too far, it'll look messy and cluttered.

After the Dark Flesh, i then took Chainmail, and painted the metal scratches over the Flesh guidelines, although being careful to leave some of the Flesh showing...essentially, you're painting just inside the Dark Flesh lines you did earlier...hopeflly the photos will show you what i mean!

And that is that...blue armour all done! Easy huh...

I also took the liberty to basecoat the cloak with Dheneb Stone... guess which bit i'll be doing next

As usual, your thoughts and comments appreciated!

Curious, I recently painted some figures for Warhammer, Telion included, and while I think mine look pretty snazy for what I can do I was wondering how you got the scratched metal effect? That is, if you do not mind sharing the technique

Telion was part of a step by step tutorial that i did for here on DA...
If you look in my Gallery, there is a folder with it all in there
Cheers,
Ben

This is brilliant. So good that I'm going to try your paint mixture on my new Ultras.

It won't be the same model (I don't have him yet), but at least it will use the same approach to the blue. If I like it, I'll post and give you full credit for the framework.

Everything in this tutorial should apply to any model you care to paint, so just find one you really want to paint... enthusiasm for the figure really helps get a good result
As i say, if you get something done, let me know

this looks fantastic, and maybe contrary to not doing the light blue, this looks like it was oce upon a time bright. fantastic!

That was my idea yea...Telion has put in long years of service, and as he's always on the go, i figured he wuldnt have much time for cleaning hehe

It's really nice. It's a really subdued colour scheme, which I think fits in well with the 41st Millenium. Looks good.

Well, it just ties it in to the rest of the model... just using a bit of colour theory really!
Oh, and some practicing...lol

Ive been trying your metalics technique on a few WoC models I like it quite a bit so far though Ive slightly modified it so they're a bit brighter

Sounds good
The original Nielson tutorial gave a brighter result, but i modified it to what you see now...same as you, i've tweaked it to my own purposes
Glad you're enjoying the experimenting!
