They had a hard time, these smurfs, perhaps the fruit of failed Gargamel's experiments, go figure. After all, wasn't it him who created the smurfette? Well, here are his first attempts .... Besides, "smurf" is not the real name of the famous blue pixies. Indeed, during a meal in 1957, the Belgian Peyo (Pierre Culliford of his real name) asked Franquin (another cartoonist) to pass him a saltcellar and, stumbling on the word, would have called it a schtroumpf ("Pass me... the schtroumpf !"): the conversation continued in schtroumpf. NOT IN SMURF !!!
