Would have preferred this over Kanoka disks anyday. The masks were awesome not only because they were like alternate faceplates, but gave trading value to them too.

I honestly thought the idea of the Toa collecting a different colored version of their mask or someone else's mask was a bit of a silly concept, because they already have their own mask that they're supposed to have mastered the ability of.
I'm amazed that the knock-off toy brand was able to make a plastic injection mold tool of that accuracy!

Well think about it. You only have access to 1 mask power. But, if you use a Suva, you can store any number of masks and instantly switch which one you're wearing to suit a specific purpose.
"Oh no, I'm about to be attacked and I'm wearing a Kaukau! Quick, change to Hau!"
Kanohi Nuva somewhat moot the concept since they can "share" their powers, but each Toa Nuva still needed each of the kanohi nuva for themselves so they could protect their villages.

That makes more sense. I would expect that each Toa could use their own mask power much more skillfully than the others that they would acquire

Well, they probably can. But they had to learn how to master the other masks as well. Presumably they already knew how to from when they were trained in karda nui, but they forgot because of their canister malfunctions.
Also, fun fact; since they are outside of the MU, and the MU no longer works, they can't freely change masks any more. But IDK if they took them with them or not.
However, Tahu and Vakama have both gone without their additional masks since the Rahkshi attack sank Ta-Koro, destroying the Suva and thus, their masks. Kinda sad. You would have thought that a robot like Mata Nui would have had some kind of backup. Or better yet, a Suva network that coursed the entire body.

Interesting, but it seems you may have forgot or not be aware that Vakama is no longer a Toa. His time as a Toa was before the Toa Mata, and now he and the other former Toa Metru/Hordika and Turaga (or another name for elder leader political character).
Looks like they might be adopting the whole thing with the different colored masks for 2015, since there are already transparent versions of Tahu's mask in different colors. It would be great if they did the mask pack thing again because it was a nice thing to have on an "MoC" if I didn't want yo make my own head completely but also didn't want to use an official character face.

No, I know Vakama is no longer a Toa. But the Turaga of mata nui changed masks using the suvas as well. Well, those masks belonged to the Toa, but the Turaga could use them as well. They collected the 6 Great Masks and 6 Noble Masks.
