Description Take one regulation beat-up PBA bowling pin, apply paint, and you have a fun piece of art! Fill in the ruts, nicks and other damage with bondo, sand it down with 120 grit, then 150, and finish with 220. Don't need to go higher unless you feel inclined. There will still be some imperfections on the surface, nothing major. Spray a couple coats of white primer to give yourself a good clean surface..and then apply your imagination..but acrylics will work better, unless you like to use oil based enamel which will increase your drying time. If you go with acrylics, after the initial painting is done, apply a spray coating of marine varnish or gloss Helmsman(tm) and let dry for a couple of days.

And there you'll have it!! Insta-Art!!

EDIT: Here's a gal who does some great bowling pin art!! She also does her art on other things too!! [link]

There's other artists out there who place their art on bowling pins. Go to your fav search engine and type in "bowling pin art" ..etc.. Also try it on dA's search window...there's a few here on dA as well!!

Oh wow, cool! For some reason bowling pins always make sense as a canvas for retro kitsch artwork like this. Love it!

Go to some of your local bowling alleys and talk to the alley mechanic. Sometimes, some alleys have pins they can't use anymore and end up trashing them.

I used to carry a bowling pin in my car for a long time, just in case I needed to knock a noggin. Now, if a cop asks "why?" I can say "Got a guy whose gonna paint it."

Definitely one of the coolest things I've seen in quite a while! Excellent idea. Any of them going up for sale?

DLNorton In reply to skullsntikis [2008-09-22 01:13:10 +0000 UTC]

Well..it's my first one. I do have a potential supplier of used bowling pins and possibly bowling balls, so you never know!

I would like to see some of these get into the local galleries here, but I figure once one has made its rounds, selling it would be a good possibility!

I'm going to be making some phonecalls this afternoon to see if I can score a few pins. This kicks ass!! I know mine would not compete with yours - that's why I was asking about the sale. Good stuff!!

Just felt like beating everyone to the punch eh? - Damn kids these days Is painting on a curved surface harder than it appears?
...
...
'Obverse'?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DLNorton In reply to operative274 [2008-09-23 06:16:35 +0000 UTC]

Painting on curved surfaces add an extra dimension. But I think it's the same as painting on a flat surface, no real difference. IMHO.

"Obverse" is a coin enthusiast's term. So say, Lincoln's head on the penny would be "obverse", and the other side is the "reverse". BTW..I don't collect coins, except to purchase a diet coke from the machine at work. My wife however works with our brother-in-law who is a numismatist [link] coin expert and investor and one of the top 5 in the whole U.S., so a lot of that jargon gets passed to me.
