Description The whole idea of "Girl Power" spawned from reading too damned much about how the latest incarnation of Supergirl was horribly portrayed, inaccessable to actual girls (and the female gender as a whole) and perusing some of the Supergirl sketches from "Draw Supergirl" meme a couple months back. That, and that fetish statue that was recently released.

So I reached over to my handy sketchbook, which I had not touched in a couple weeks, and said to myself, "Hell. *I* can come up with a Supergirl comic better than *THAT*" and started drawing what I would eventually dub "Girl Power".

Girl Power is the mighty pre-adolescent trio of Supergirl, Wondergirl, and Batgirl. It was originally supposed to just be about Supergirl. The thing is... I'm not a huge Superman fan and I barely know anything about Supergirl herself. But I like drawing girls with hammers with oftentimes clueless or hapless boys. So I decided a young Wondergirl would be Supergirl's friend and co-discoverer on the journey of learning just what the hell is going on in the place. And then I had to add Batgirl because it completed things and let me make jokes with the Bat Family.

So here's the first of the Girl Power Trio and origin of it all: Supergirl. Also known as Kara Zor-El from Argo City, Krypton. Survivor of a now exploded planet, rocketed away by... okay, you should be able to figure this all out.

For Supergirl's design, I took the original suit (one-piece dress/frock?), lifted the slightly-longer sleeves from the new costume, and (though they're not shown) added some matching biker shorts (there would actually be a story behind that decision). I also decided to add a strand of "S" shaped hair, and kept her hair about the same length it was in the Supergirl movie. Her yellow belt has a larger pouch for storing things behind her back and her boots would be of the red, heelless and hiking variety. The "S" on her emblem is also a little more stylized to look a little more like a lightning bolt. I might play with the angle on it a bit more.

Kara is about 12 even though technically she'd be about 40 since she would older than Superman when he was born. But she IS 12 for all intents and purposes unless I find it funny to do otherwise. Regardless, she's taken in by Superman and now lives with Martha and Jonathon Kent in Smallville. This would be fine, but she's a 12 year old from a planet far more advaned than ours, much less a Kansas farming community.

Knowing that Kal-El/Clark Kent saves the world as Superman, Kara has been waiting for the day when she'd absorbed enough Yellow Sun Radiation for her own powers to develop. Once they do, she decides she's equally capable in superheroing. And she is, for the most part. But she is also still 12, still learning about a new culture, still has to go to school, still has to maintain a secret identity, stil has to... wait, she's gotta do what to the cow? Anywho, many things are in store. Along with crazy space monsters, a pseudo-rivalry with Batgirl, boys and whatever else pops into my head.

I tried to keep "Sailor Moon" and other shoujo manga in mind while sketching out these characters. I think a master villain behind a henchman of the week structure, with intermitten hanging out with her Trio friends and wondering if Jimmy Olsen likes her. Certainly a rough idea, but one where I think a very smart, though very alien and naive Supergirl would shine.

And now I will shut up.
