Can’t say I’m a fan of the back-lasers. Would’ve it killed filmmakers to use his nuclear pulse from the 80’s/90’s?

I guess they wanted to put a different spin on it.
Shin Gojira is a uniquely different incarnation than the one from the 90's, that's probably why his attack is more of a living Death Star than a nuclear fire breathing dragon like the past ones were.
They also probably wanted to one-up the 2014's charge up attack.
