Ladies and gentlemen, the original lady in red! Who else could rock that red trench coat and fedora? Though what she wears underneath has always changed depending on the continuity, she always has her signature trench coat and fedora. She’s appeared in game shows, video games, and cartoons. She’s even coming back for a new series on Netflix in 2019, and she will be voiced by Gina Rodriguez.

She can steal anything that isn’t nailed down. If it’s nailed down, she can steal something to remove the nails and steal it anyway, along with the thing that removed the nails. For those of us who grew up in the 90s, the first thing she stole was our hearts. We have pursued her across the country, around the world, through time, and across the cosmos. We won’t stop until she has been apprehended. And even then, we’ll start up a new game and do it all over again, with the loot, warrant, and a pair of handcuffs in our pockets.

She started out as a high ranking agent for the ACME Detective Agency, but she grew bored of it and turned to a life of crime for more excitement. She formed the Villain’s International League of Evil (V.I.L.E.), where its members help her steal whatever she wants. ACME has been chasing her ever since, and consider her capture to be the Holy Grail. How she is able to steal these things (such as the smile off the Mona Lisa, all the goulash, the Bermuda Triangle, and the moon to name a few) is unexplained, as is how she has avoided being captured for so many years. Then again, perhaps nobody has made a prison cell strong enough to hold her yet.

I was inspired to draw Carmen after seeing someone cosplay as her at a con one year, and remembered how much I enjoyed the show back in the day. There was also someone on the internet who did a role play as her, which was very interesting to listen to. Then it was announced to have a new series on Netflix, and I decided to give drawing her a shot. Drawing her trench coat was not too difficult, but adding all the wrinkles was a challenge. Her hat gave me a lot of trouble, along with the hand holding it. Her skin tone is slightly darker, but I don’t have the proper colored pencil for that. I really need to expand on my skin color varieties.
