Description
She is the villain of my game. Possessing the powers of all three mermaid heroes, she scours the seas for a black crystal. According to legend, the crystal will grant its user great power if presented to the Sacred Pool during the night of a full moon. If she gets this power, she will be unstoppable, and she’ll flood the earth with massive tidal waves.

When my H2O game idea went down the drain (no pun intended), Charlotte Watsford had to be dropped from the story. Malachite is her replacement, and she is even worse than that fiery redhead nobody likes. She also has the same abilities, and the same attitude. I gave her the same evil glare that Princess Azula gives in the Avatar series. That expression instills fear, and any video game villain should be fearsome, right?

I named her Malachite after the mineral of the same name. I still like naming mermaids after minerals (my Birthstone Mermaids for instance). Malachite was the perfect name because in many words in the English language, the prefix mal- means something bad. Examples include malice, malignant, malicious, malaria, and malevolent. There was no question this would be the perfect name for the villain in my game! And to follow with the name, she bears the same colors as the stone she is named after.

Before you ask, no she isn’t a Birthstone Mermaid, nor is she associated with them.

Malachite challenges you at the end of every level. She will wait for you in a room filled with several large objects to hide in. She will emerge from one of these objects at random, launch an eight-way attack at you (her Elemental Wave), and retreat. The projectiles will randomly be water bubbles, fireballs, or snowballs. Your task is to shoot her with your attacks until her health is depleted and she flips upside down (a classic pose in old NES games).

Halfway through the game, she will find the Black Crystal, and she will absorb some of its power during your next encounter. This will give her the ability to create lightning, which will inflict more damage to you. She will randomly attack with her Elemental Wave or lightning. Defeating her is the same, but she will take more hits to defeat this time, and there will be more things for her to hide behind. During the final encounter, she will absorb more energy from the crystal, and she will only use her lightning attacks during this battle. Taking her down here will end the game, but only if you do so before time runs out. Otherwise, she’ll be empowered by the full moon and the crystal, and end the game.

Malachite becoming stronger is a nod to Bowser from Super Mario Bros. In the first five worlds, all he had was his fire breath to attack you. But what happens when you get from World Six and beyond? He adds hammers to his arsenal. Fighting him isn’t so easy anymore!
