Recommended song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=71lLnE… (Dance through the Danger, sung by Shantae’s voice actress Cristina Vee…in other words, Sailor Mars)

She is the main character from the Wayforward-developed Shantae series, and a half-genie.  She was assigned to protect Scuttle Town from Risky Boots.  She has the magical ability to transform into various animals by performing dances.  Yes, really.  Why else would she wear an outfit like that?  Not that I’m complaining.  Shantae has curves in all the right places.  And she attacks her enemies primarily by whipping them with her hair.  She can also use fire spells and spiked balls that circle her to attack as well once you buy them.  She’s also handy with pirate gear if the situation calls for it.

The original game was released long after the Game Boy Color had passed the torch on to its successor, and as a result, the game is very rare and expensive.  Luckily, you can download it on the eShop for a much lower price, alongside its two sequels Risky’s Revenge and Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse.  I highly recommend playing all three games.  The graphics are gorgeous, the soundtrack is amazing (done by the same guy who does the music for Shovel Knight), and all three games are Metroidvanias.  It hits all the sweet spots!  Be sure to check out the fourth game Half Genie Hero when it comes out in September!

The moment I played Risky’s Revenge, I fell in love with the series.  I enjoy playing Metroidvania games, and going back to previous areas with power ups I grabbed recently to see how much more of the game I could explore.  I wanted to draw Shantae for so long, but I could not find any cosplays of her, or any models to match the pose I wanted.  It was placed on the back burner.  That is, until I saw the trailer for Half-Genie Hero, and squeed hearing Cristina Vee singing Dance through the Danger.  The inspiration returned, and this time, I was able to find a very beautiful model for the pose, and plenty of Shantae artwork to make sure everything was accurate.  I couldn’t match her skin tone however, but that was only a minor setback.  Everything else fell into place.  Even better, the model was a trained dancer, just like Shantae!  I doubt the model turns into animals after dancing though.
