Description

Out of all the known evil's ever encountered by the Doctor in almost 56 years of Doctor Who, Sutekh the Destroyer, from the 1975 4th Doctor adventure 'Pyramids of Mars', surely must be the ultimate evil the Doctor has ever encountered . . yes, even more evil and more powerful then the Daleks themselves if I dare say so.

The Doctor once told his companion, Sarah Jane Smith, in the story itself that not even his own people, the Time Lords of Gallifrey, could possibly destroy Sutekh, and if the Doctor had not delt with Sutekh the way he did in the story, then no doubt Sutekh would have come across the likes of Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels and lord knows what else in the universe of Doctor Who.

With Sutekh dead at the end of 'Pyramids of Mars', the Daleks truly are now the most evil and powerful monsters in the universe of Doctor Who, but it would seem that for a long time, they may have been, at least in the classic series, the second most evil race in the universe after Sutekh himself.

I guess the Daleks should be greatful to the Doctor then that Sutekh is dead, otherwise Sutekh would probably taunt them about being second best of evil villian's in the Doctor Who universe, so at least they'd never have to bother trying to exterminate Sutekh themselves.

And before anyone dares say it, yes I know Big Finish did an audio involving Bernice Summerfield meeting Sutekh somehow, and that the 10th Doctor apparently did in some graphic novels featuring companions who never appeared alongside him in the new series, but it's all a matter really of what one accepts to be canon, so I disregard those modern stories featuring Sutekh and just prefer to believe the 4th Doctor aged the bugger to death in that Vortex that I've always called the Smartie's Vortex . . you'd understand why I call it that if your familar with Smartie's !

'Pyramids of Mars' for me was one of my first experiances of Doctor Who as a young boy in the early 1990's with the VHS Video release, and I think I often did wonder if Sutekh was more powerful then the Daleks themselves.

Indeed, and it took 740 of them to trap Sutekh.

Sutekh's son Anubis shows up in some of the 10th Doctor Comics.

It would be kinda cool to see Sutekh again, or at least someone from his species. He is a very threatening force to reckon with.Β

I'd love to see Sutekh face off against the 12th Doctor, but that's just me wishful thinking.

Much as I like Sutekh, I'd prefer they didn't. I wouldn't want him being brought back like what happened with the Weeping Angel's, bring them back was always a mistake every time they returned, because their fear factor always diminished with each return that they became less scary each time, and became simple fan service.

To me, Weeping Angel's are Doctor Who's answer to Joss Whedon's Gentlemen from Buffy the Vampire Slayers epic episode 'Hush', they are only truly scary in 'Blink' and not the stories that followed. It would have been a mistake if Joss Whedon brought back the Gentlemen again and again because if the way they are killed by simply screaming in order to blow their heads off, then it's too obvious and predictable in how to kill them . . just scream . . bang, head explondes . . the end !.

Pyramids of Mars is a brilliant story. I see why you would say that Sutekh could be more evil than the Daleks-the Daleks might have a sadistic hatred of all other species, but they were genetically hardwired to hate, and hate, and hate. Sutekh's race, the Osirans, was not hardwired this way. I think Sutekh himself described it best. "Evil? Your evil is my good." He is evil because he finds it fun...and that is the most monstrous thing that one can be, being cruel for cruelty's own sake. Sadism and Destruction is not his means to an end-it is an end in and of itself for him.

I know, shocking eh, it's blasthamy to think that maybe there is someone or something more evil then the Daleks in Doctor Who [or Sci-Fi in general], but it seems between 1963 to 1975, the Daleks was perhaps not the most evil being in the universe . . not till Sutekh was killed off at least . . now thou, the Daleks to this day need not worry, as they are truly indeed the No.1 evil in Doctor Who [and Sci-Fi in general !].
