The woods of Oakfern were different than the ones of Blackwood. They also were dark and intimidating, but in a completely different way. They were lush and full of life, birds chirping everywhere, insects buzzing about and still there was something threatening about these green walls all around them.

Starling already had been here before, but for Vera and little Siv it was their first time and even though she never complained, Starling could see the tension and concern in Vera’s face and how she made sure to always keep Siv safely between them and not let him lag behind. Starling knew to some point her concern was not without reason, Oakfern was a dangerous territory. There were not just the fawnlings notorious for their hostile behaviour towards strangers, but also the predators. Yet, it wasn’t like Starling was leading Vera and Siv through Oakfern utterly unprepared, he knew his way around and he also knew how to make sure not to be noticed, if he wanted to.

“Are you okay?” he still asked her.

Vera heaved a bit of a sigh.

“Yes, yes, I’m okay.” She said, as per usual, yet when he looked at her, she gave in with a soft breath, “Are you sure no predator will catch our scent? And those Oakferns . . . I’m concerned about them. Siv can’t outrun them, you know that.”

“Don’t worry, as long as we won’t go too near to their caverns, they won’t bother. They mostly stay inside, they won’t come out, if we don’t trespass.” Starling tried to assure her again, “And don’t forget, the wind is on our side.” He smiled, making a blow of wind softly brush pass them, “I can make sure our scent won’t be carried far away.” He said with an assuring nod.

Vera nodded, even though her face stayed concerned. Her gaze fell down to Siv, who was tagging along. She was so proud of him, her brave, strong little boy. Again and again she wondered if this journey had been the right decision, if it was too much, if she was a bad mother to put all this onto the small shoulders of her son, but then she remembered the horrible night when Taharial attacked them and remembered that this was pretty much their only alternative.

They would make it, if only for little Siv they would make it. Despite the dangers, they would make it. In Windborne he would grow into a strong stag and they would start over new. It would be a new life across the ocean, where nobody knew her. Where she could be herself.

“How much longer will it take until we reach the beach?” Vera asked eventually.

“It’ll still take a while, I’m afraid, but by next spring we will be in Windborne, I promise you.” Starling smiled and Vera couldn’t help, but return it.

They're currently travelling through Oakfern, heading for Windborne, having no idea about the stuff going on there. Yet.
