Description Legend has it that the 12th century Hay Castle, in Hay-on-Wye, Wales, was built by a giantess, Moll Walbee, said by some to be a witch, by carrying the huge stones in her apron. Years later she was imprisoned, with her son, in the dungeons of Windsor Castle, where the vindictive King John left them both to starve to death. Tradition says that, when the bodies were eventually recovered, it was found that poor Moll had gnawed at her sons cheeks in a desperate bid to survive.
The Castle was taken and sacked on several occasions during the years of conflict between the Norman English and the Welsh. In 1322 when King Edward II captured the castle and gave it into wardship. After being sacked again by Owain Glyndwr in 1402, the Castle became the home of the Dukes of Buckingham from 1444. Edward, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, was beheaded in 1521 and his estates were confiscated.
The castle has been plagued by massive destructive fires over the years. The most recent fire, which destroyed a great part of the castle, occurred in 1977. The castle is now part of a "Haunted Castles" tour circuit in the UK. Parts of it have been restored and one can rent flats there now for 25 pounds per person per night.

What fantastic workmanship nothing old like that where I live in Australia

Yes there probably wouldn't be... with Australia being so much "newer", at least as far as architecture goes. But I'm sure lots of Brits envy some of your natural wonders and drier climate. And here in the mid-west USA there aren't such buildings either.

That's for sure...I'd love to discover something like Stonehenge here on the Great Plains!

Living in Florida, where the walmart built in 1992 is considered "of historical significance" (kidding, but still...) it always seems unbelievable to me how such old and beutiful buildings are left in ruin. Really melancholly atmosphere (even the clouds)

Thanks much for the favey on this so many months ago! My bad lol I missed a bunch of messages from this time. Yes I think some of these big ruined building get to this state of decay because they would be so hugely expensive to renovate or restore, especially ones that are privately owned.

of all your hdr shots this one seems to be one of the more properly executed... unless you're trying to achieve the halos in each one, they are all a bit off-balance. you should be able to adjust the hdr settings to get the levels to balance out and the make the thing look a little more natural. cheers!

Sorry for my very late reply. I've been planning and traveling a bit recently. My "HDR" pics are not really HDR, just tone mapped versions of single frames. I'm still trying to learn how to do it properly. Thank you for the constructive critique. It is appreciated.

Thanks very much! It was cool, I was the only person "mucking" round the back of the castle ruins and it was a gray and cloudy day...adding to the mystery

That's just what you need when visiting an old castle!!!! Grey and cloudy weather sure adds mystery!!! And this year we had enough of those days!!!! Well, did I say enough?..... I mean: TOO MUCH!!!!

Oh I hadn't heard about too much rain in the Netherlands. I know in England they had WAY too much recently. We could use some of it here back in the midwest USA. My garden is looking a bit parched.

Thanks very much. A Brit named Richard Booth bought it in 1961 and opened a secondhand bookshop inside and on the grounds of the castle. He's the self-appointed "King of Hay".
