Description Pen and ink drawing done as part of a portfolio of sperm whale behavior for Cetacean Society International, as observed by Dr. Hal Whitehead and recorded in his book "Voyage to the Whales". Dr. Whitehead and his team were the first scientists to witness the birth of a sperm whale. Here is Dr. Whitehead's description of the scene.
"The whale began to make unusual movements, flexing at the middle to show first both fluke tips and head, with her body U-shaped, and then arching her back. A few seconds later she repeated these contortions...a rush of dark blood and a solid object were expelled from the genital area right at the water surface."

Are you serious? I've checked carefully on the guidelines for Mature Content, and this image doesn't even come close. Kids are shown much more than this in science classes every day, even in elementary school. Or on the Discovery/Science Channel.

Thank you. That was my intention. Back in the late 80s-early 90s, I used to correspond with Dr. Whitehead on a regular basis, both about his work, and about my sperm whale art. He said that my sperm whale art was the best/most accurate he had ever seen.

Beautiful... theres much simplicity to this, like an illustration in a Melville peice. Sufice to say, theres more than enough emotion here. ^________^
