A very quick "tutorial" to help with the lights. This is NOT a step-by-step. It just tells how to choose your light sources on this specific drawing.

So let's just say we have this drawing to color. Let's also say it is a night scene.

Note : I'm only working on the character here, but of course you should go for the background as well.

1. The general color : it is up to you actually. I chose blue and put it at first so that the white doesn't scare me. it matches the sky color, which is never black at night.

2. Basic color of the character : it will probably be darker than the sky, and less saturated. It is only a basis, you will have to work on it later.

3. Choosing the main light (L1) : I'm assuming there's a moon or equivalent to light the scene, and set it as my main light, on the left. I also choose it to be light blue - white isn't really interesting here.

4. I add a second light source (L2), that's coming from the ground, and is a lot softer than L1. Since there's mostly grass on this ground, I'm choosing a greenish/yellowish tone.

5. There is also the big rock under the character, that reflects the moonlight a bit (L3). It is another diffuse light that will help soften the shadows from L1.

When you decided (only decided, do not paint them like I did yet ) where your lights were, you can start coloring.
Just remember the shadows aren't black - they are generally the opposite of the light color (if your light is orange for example, your shadows might be blueish). That's a point of view though.
