Description The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a large bear distributed across much of northern Eurasia and North America. The brown bear’s principal range includes parts of Russia, the United States (mostly in Alaska), Canada, the Carpathian region (especially Romania, but also Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland and so on), the Balkans, Sweden and Finland, where it is the national animal. The brown bear is the most widely distributed of all bears.

Brown bears have long, thick fur, with a moderately long mane at the back of the neck. They have very large and curved claws, those present on the forelimbs being longer than those on the hind limbs. Adult bears generally weigh between 100 and 635 kg (220 and 1,400 lb).

Brown bears were once native to much of Asia, the Atlas Mountains of Africa, Europe, and North America, but are now extinct in some areas, and their populations have greatly decreased in other areas. There are approximately 250,000 brown bears left in the world. The largest populations are in Russia with 182,990, the United States with 32,500, and Canada with 21,750. They seem to have no altitudinal preferences and have been recorded from sea-level to an elevation of 5,000 m (16,000 ft) (the latter in the Himalayas).
