Painting portraits with gouache is a very tough job. It doesn't flow/diffuse like watercolor, it doesn't mix as seamlessly as oil. I commend you for giving it a try and I actually like the result.

... funny enough I painted my hair whiter than it really is ... hahaha
But the effect in the sunlight is exaggerated here.
My wife found that I look a bit north african which probably has to do with my white cotton shirt (am sailing).
Well, to be honest... I haven't done many portraits yet but it's good to leave the comfort once in a while.
And last bit not least it's a perfect winterexercise for a pleinair painter

I see what your wife means by the North African look, though of course for all I know that could be accurate.
I've been too scared of portrait so far. With trees and clouds, who's to argue that they are wrong, but a portrait actually has to look right...
