Description Here is my entry for 's 25th contest, Heroes, Villains, and Sidekicks. I've actually always wanted to do a Joan of Arc piece but I never got around to it until now. I had no clue who she was until I got to read about her in Social Studies class in eighth grade, and what I read about her wasn't even much but it was enough to get me interested.

If this was a Disney movie, I'm pretty sure a lot would be changed to fit fairy tale standards, and it would probably be along the lines of The Hunchback of Notre Dame or Pocahontas... or even Mulan. Here's a rough synopsis I thought of while creating this piece.

Synposis: Joan is a quiet, mousy peasant girl who lives in Dormery, France. She's a bit... pathetic and nobody really believes in her and no one thinks she's really capable of much. An angel, Theo, watching from above, sees this and feels sorry for the girl. Seeing as he can't really do much for her, he sends her visions for quite some time. Years, in fact. When she's grown up, she finally decides to take action with her visions as her guide. She tells her story to King Charles, claiming she can lead an army to victory. Humoring her, King Charles allows Joan to merely accompany an army on the siege to Orleans. Theo visits her the following night, revealing to her that he'd been the one sending her visions. The two strike up a friendship, and while heading to Orleans, Theo trains Joan to ride and fight. Finally, when Joan and the army reach Orleans, Joan herself leads the army and launches an attack on the English. The French leave as victors, praising Joan. However, Joan's objective is only half complete. Her visions tell her to lead Charles to Rheims in order to be crowned King. With Theo at her side, supporting her, Joan and her army safely transfer Charles to Rheim where he is crowned King. Unknown to Joan, an evil sorcerer had been closely keeping track of her. Hearing that her visions were being sent to her by an angel, the sorcerer sought to kill Joan and force the angel to give him the visions necessary to be crowned King of France. Using his dark powers, the sorcerer attacks the city of Compiegne to lure Joan. Sure enough, Joan and her army head to Compiegne where she gets captured by the sorcerer. He takes her to his castle where first, he tries coaxing her to give him her angel. When Joan refuses, the sorcerer lets Joan return to Rheim. When Joan arrives in Reihm, King Charles has overheard of her and the sorcerer. Believing that she's actually a witch, in league with the sorcerer the whole time, he orders her to be executed by being burned at the stake. Before she is burned, Theo appears, stopping the executioner. He explains what has happened and Joan is freed. The sorcerer, watching in the crowd, grows furious and tries to kill Joan himself. Theo, using all of his strength and powers, defeats the sorcerer, and is left weak. After saying one last goodbye to Joan, he fades away. Joan returns to Dormery, holding her memory of Theo, her good friend.

In my head, the synopsis sounded better. Reading it over, it just sounds stupid.
There's so many plot holes in it too. ._. I definitely ruined the history of Joan of Arc as well. I'm sorry D:

I hope I did her justice in my artwork though...
I had a lot of fun working with fire. I used a few tutorials and I think it worked out okay. I didn't get the effect I wanted but I don't think it's that bad. I definitely wanted to link fire with Joan because she actually was burned at the stake... but for obvious reasons, a Disney movie wouldn't kill off their main character..
I wanted Joan to look bruised or... gritty, so ash on her face, messy hair, and dirty armor.

This is the worst description ever. .___.
I'll stop now... it's 2:00 already.

It sounds intriguing, but I'm afraid it'd be a disaster of Treasure Planet proportions. For one, changing the ending of Joan of Arc's story would probably be seen as even MORE insulting than Pocahontas was. It'd piss off the Catholic Church something fierce for cutting out the reason WHY she was canonized in the first place, and making her survive would be seen as an insult to St. Joan's memory. Also it'd be compared, and in no flattering terms, to Carl Dreyer's version.

Meh, this was from years ago and I don't think I really put that much thought into my reworked version of the story.

Either way, it sounds almost too bad of an idea to be true.

I like the picture. ^_^Β The synopsis doesn't sound exactly right, but I think it's because of the words you used to tell it. The important parts need something more for them to sound important. More mention of the conflict within those parts.

Joan of Arc sounds like a good idea to me. Seems like something Disney could do.

I once dreamt of a Joan of Arc animated movie made by Disney, and they did keep her death. There was no magic but it had comical soldiers and two fictional lovers who witness her execution and in the epilogue, the "Dinosaur" theme by James Newton Howard is played while the fictional lad remembers Joan riding her horse in flashbacks and waving her banner gloriously. Then the credits rolled and the pop ballad "Imagine me without you" performed by Luis Fonsi and "On My Knees" by Jaci Velasquez played!

The "Courtship" beat (in a er unusual way) played while the fictional characters were children playing together in the fields before the English attack(Meteor strike music from Dinosaur) and "The End of our Island" when the boy swears to avenge for the destruction and runs to a church. "Across the Desert" when all the soldiers march on their horses. The "Raptors/Stand Together" music was used in the battle scenes. "Finding Water" when Joan drives the English away.

The story has potential. I admire Joan of Arc. But I don't like the idea of a sorcerer forcing Theo, the angel to show him the visions that were meant for Joan. I would have prefer if the sorcerer used his own dark magic to find out about Joan and try to ruin her. I agree that Disney wouldn't kill off their main character but I can see them going for a bittersweet ending where maybe Joan dies but she completed her mission.

What does Pucelle mean?

Ah? It's strange... it's one of her well-known nickname in France.
Hum... how says that... "une pucelle" is a Virgin. So, I thinks "La Pucelle" mean for her she was a religious and don't married.

This is really good!

I really wish Disney would do a movie about Joan of Arc, too. And while I wish they would stick to history (which they rarely ever do...) your idea actually sounds pretty interesting, too! Fairytale-ish, but not too cheesily magical! And definitely a much happier ending than the one history gives.

If Disney ever did do a movie of Joan of Arc... though I doubt it... I hope they'd make it as a 2d animated movie. And thanks again

And you're welcome!

I knew she was Joan of Arc even before reading the description.
I've always loved her story. I think she was the first badass girl I've heard of.
Didn't she have short hair? or was that just a movie I've seen.
I love the fire! It looks pretty realistic, specially the one's at the bottom.

And the story sounds legit to me!

Orly?
She's probably the only real badass girl I'd heard of.
Yeah, she actually did cut her hair for battle so that she would look like a man. I know in The Messenger, Mila Jovovich, playing Joan, had short hair. I just thought wind-swept hair would look more epic here.

And thanks!
