Telephone lines run past a small village in the hills just West of Margate - a small town on the Kwazulu Natal coastline.
The irony of course being the marvel of technology, connecting people around the world, whilst communities like this have no immediate access to water supply. Their survival depends on a nearby river - a meeting place to also bathe & wash clothes - all from the same vicinity. (I know this because during my stay here I also ended up using the river to take a bath, whilst the women of the village washed their clothes on some nearby rocks & also carried away water)
Water is transported in any vessel capable of carrying on the head - a remarkable feat I have often witnessed though Africa - it is also mostly women doing the carrying.

World stats:
Presently, 1.1 billion people lack access to improved water supply and 2.4 billion to improved sanitation. Unless action is stepped up, the number of people who lack access to improved water supply could increase to 2.3 billion by 2025.

The picture, and the words, are so like the India that I know. A great shot, and eloquent commentary.

Many thanks

I have not yet had the opportunity to travel to India. I can only account for the tales & photos from friends who have. I understand it to be a country of great diversity, beauty & extremity (I guess in this respect it is much like Africa)

And I've not been to Africa, not anywhere in Africa. And yes, I think in the width of the range of conditions both natural and human India and Africa are probably similar.

At first sight this is just a lovely, serene picture. How typical of you that the description questions even one's initial response to the image. Good work as ever, Donald
