The colors in the sky are simply gorgeous. The silhouettes of the trees frame the setting sun and draw me into the image. Wow - where was this picture taken?

RAW format... the quick and easy answer is this: the imageas the sensor in your camera sees it, without any processing from your camera. You download them in your computer and "develop" them in Photoshop (or some other program that can handle RAW). ItΒ΄s very similar to a digital "nevative".
Advantages: no JPEG compression (and therefore no loos in quality); no post-processing from the camera trying to guesstimate the best settings; you have complete control over the "development" by having the original data to play with...
Disadvantages: a 3 mega-pixel image is 4.55 MB; it takes more time to "develop" the photos; you need the camera to be plugged to a computer to be able to enable/disable the RAW mode.
If you had not heard about RAW format, IΒ΄d stay with "normal" photos and wouldnΒ΄t worry about it
