Description This is a charcoal rendering I did of St. Barnabas from a larger painting done by Sandro Botticelli in 1488. The instructor for the portrait class I'm taking gave us all xeroxed copies of different pieces of art to make the blacks really dark to work on shading.

oh, thanks a lot! although I'm not sure how much that class is actually teaching me. It's a bit of a disappointment so far, since it's a beginners class there are people who need a lot of basic instruction. plus working from live models is kind of annoying cause they are constantly shifting their heads, which is understandable but frustrating cause i have to keep starting over. this is pretty much the only decent thing that i've done expect maybe the self portrait I did last week, which turned out ok. i still suck at hair though...

for hair its good to use a rubber. make grey hair with graphite (maybe graphitedust and a cotton pad) but not a lot of preassure, erase sinlge hair out and define the spaces between them with graphite again. if you want to get dark hair use this method to get the highlights. i think you're doing well. where is your self portrait? oh and in this one you could shade the eyeballs. they are a bit too white and flat . keep it up! you're doing a good job.

how did i not notice that! i'll shade those tonight for sure, and thanks for the hair tip, that's a really good technique. hopefully the portrait on thursday's class will be up to snuff enough for me to post. I might post the self portrait, havent decided yet...thanks again for all the help, youre awesome!
