Description Carina received the predictable amount of grief from her friends when she revealed that she planned to visit Restraint World.

“You're gonna let some sci-fi gizmo disassemble all your body atoms and them put them back together again?”

“Even if you do survive the passage you'll emerge into a barbaric world that keeps their women enslaved.”

And on and on and on.  Carina just tuned them out and paid close attention to her cultural orientation.  On the day she made the passage she discovered, as so many others had reported, that it was no big deal.  Perhaps a very mild version of the sensation you got in a descending airplane, but her ears never filled up like that.  Easy-peasy.

Once she arrived she was stunned to see that the world was just as advertised:  all women were bound or handcuffed, and most, like herself, had them behind their backs.  She just concentrated on fitting in.  In truth she found it easier than she had anticipated because everything in the world was tailored to the ease and comfort of women bound just like she was.

Her first two days of sightseeing were exciting and rewarding, and she encountered only the minimal amount of inconvenience she expected anyway.  On the third day, though, that fell apart!

She had ventured further across Johnstown than she had been yet, and traveled by bus.  Before she left her room she took care to study a map and commit to memory how to get to her destination from the bus stop.  She got off at the right stop, but the neighborhood was more confusing that she expected.  To make matters worse, she had failed to properly charge her Smart Glasses and just when she needed them most her heads-up display went blank and her voice commands brought no response.  They were dead!  Relying on her preparations she went what she thought was the right way but after several turns she had to admit she was well and truly lost!  Fighting down panic and tugging fruitlessly against the handcuffs that held her arms behind her back she suddenly thought things had gone from bad to worse!

Down the street came a man on a motorcycle, an older guy with wild and unkempt hair and beard, her mental image of a biker gang member from back home!  To her horror, he pulled the bike to a stop, parked it and got off.  As he ambled slowly toward her she fought down her “fight or flight” instincts.  Fighting was out of the question with her wrists locked in handcuffs behind her back, and running away would only get her more lost!  Besides, the guy was now upon her!  Determined to resist his rape or robbery as best she could, she barely comprehended what he said when he spoke.

“Miss?  Are you in some kind of trouble?  You surely have a distressed look on your face.  How may I be of assistance?”

So, there it was!  The culture of chivalry she had read and heard so much about, and on display in front of her from the most unlikely of rescuers.  Ashamed of her earth-world assessment of the man, and embarrassed by her ill-founded judgment of his motives, she could barely stammer out where she wanted to go, and admit she was lost.

With her permission he drew the Smart Glasses from her face and plugged them into his pocket battery pack to recharge.  Then, assuring her that she wasn't far off course, he proceeded to escort her on foot for the six blocks or so that it took to get where she wanted to go.  Along the way she learned that he was a retired fellow, a grandfather several times over, and had spent his working years in the king's palace security detachment.  In retirement he had indulged his love of motorcycles, and let his hair grow because “I had to shave clean every day for 40 working years!”  He was, in fact, a perfect gentleman and went literally many blocks out of his way to help her!  Seeing her safely to her destination he returned her now at least partially charged glasses and wished her an enjoyable remainder of her vacation.

Carina had learned more about Gerfrankia and Restraint World by getting lost than she would have discovered in a long and uneventful vacation!  Everything her friends had told her was completely wrong, and she now knew first hand that this world was everything that her own world was not!  She was determined to go home and spread the word about what R-World REALLY was like!

Seeing everyone talk about possible ways for her to ride the motorcycle, I am left thinking that even though several ways have been proposed maybe he wouldn’t want to risk it with a woman just getting used to her restraints.  All the solutions aside from the sidecar would require a decent sense of balance which most of us use our arms for, and Carina probably hasn’t had any practice riding a fast moving vehicle while her arms aren’t available to help her balance.

Do any visitors from one universe to the other ever decide to immigrate, or is it even allowed?

Thanks!  Glad you liked it.  I've seen it go both ways, so I'm not sure there's a trend to identify.  I think THIS guy did like he said:  he wanted a change from clean-shaving every day.  But then I suspect his favorite granddaughter liked it, and that was the end of that.  Never shaved again!

A woman in R-world could use a side-car.

You probably meant a motorcycle with a side saddle for a female passenger.

That biker looks like an amalgam of several that I know; all are perfect gentlemen. Um, more or less.

I'm liking Carina's stance here - she's really got into the R-World culture!

He takes seasonal gigs playing Santa Claus.  I think Carina's an experienced traveler.

Interesting!? Couldn't he just give her a ride to the place she was headed? If public transport is adapted for the travel of women in handcuffs (niches in the back of the seats for hands shackled behind the back), then any other transport must be adapted for shackled women. Moreover, every biker has a girlfriend. (I know I did. Just terribly wanted to ride a motorcycle, but then "Verkhovyna" could not cope).

It must be decided in the R-world. Low back on the rear saddle of the motorcycle with a handle behind it. And, probably, knee stops that the woman could keep surely in a saddle.    And, most importantly!

Bikers, driving a motorcycle with a female passenger, completely changed the driving style.
(When the tradition of women being tied up outside their homes began, there were no motor vehicles. And, when in R - world emerged motor transport, women simply not represented, that they can manage them).

WOMEN-REVERENCE!  MEN-RESPECT!

You are correct, of course!

But, perhaps because Carina is a visitor, and we don't know what her motorcycle experience might be back home, perhaps she was uncomfortable with his offer.  While native R-World women would feel secure she might not have.

There, did I talk my way out of it?

I have a book in my collection in which the author, a columnist for a paper, writes of seeing a 'stereotypical looking biker type' and a young girl having dinner at a restaurant where he was also eating. Among other observations the author noted he had the girl finish her meal before she could have dessert, and then she went to the women's restroom by herself while he waited outside. Their rapport convinced him the biker type was certainly the girl's father - another case of 'you can't always tell a book by its cover.'

Well, I suppose if the bike had a sissy bar, and perhaps a strap or handle to grasp with her bound hands.  I'm sure R-World ingenuity could work something out!

On earth she could wrap her arms around him.  But on R-world, she can wait until they get to home or to a hotel room

That bike looks like a 1950's Triumph, to me.  My dad has been riding bikes since 1948 or so and I have picked up a few things about the hobby.

That's about the right vintage, maybe a bit older.  Of course on R-World they wouldn't have the same brand names like Triumph, Indian, etc.
