I've known Don Lanning for a very short time after having been introduced to his work by another favorite sculptor, Evan Campbell. I was immediately impressed with the absolute quality of his work and the apparent thought he puts into each project.

Mr. Lanning was responsible for bringing to life several of the characters of several of my favorite movies and continues to astound his viewers with the ultimate realism he brings to all his creations.

His "Star Trek Alien" is no exception and I am in awe of the minute details he is able to include in this bust. The shape of the head itself seems to indicate a humanoid figure of vast intelligence, and the wide-set, almond-shaped eyes, while commonly used in alien renditions, retain a very non-threatening "humanness" which gives his alien a likable personality.

I feel this "personality" is made most evident by the subtle, wry grin and the very realistic skin folds and wrinkles. It's obvious that this alien is not young and inexperienced which certainly brings into question what experiences he has endured. I am aware that the coloring of the skin and eyes were added via PhotoShop, but they serve to bring the sculpture to life and complete Mr. Lanning's vision.

In conclusion, I have ALWAYS said that there are too few GOOD sculptors represented here at dA, and with the gracious appearance of Don Lanning, we viewers are extremely fortunate to see the work of one of the best! I encourage everyone to take the time to peruse the entirety of his gallery as you'll no doubt find yourself enthralled at the scope of this man's talent, skill and creativity!

I seem to remember the midwife who delivers Kirk had similar eyes. Nice work

Okay, now I have to see this movie. I meant to anyway, but this adds incentive.

Very cool. An interesting to take on the Schwa/ Grey alien. I have no crit for you as it looks pretty damn good to my eyes... talking of which...

... have you got any tips for modelling eyes (such as shape and size) for realistic faces?

Thanks

I don't know if I feel qualified to give a real, honest-to-gosh critique, but I really admire how you made the face assymetrical. That makes it seem so much more like real life, even if it's alien real life. Really nice work.

Sweet work. I think I remember this one in the movie. Was this one used at the beginning when that lady helped deliver the baby during the escape?
